Make sure to you’re hopping onto the socials following us on Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, good old boys FF there as well. But I’m super excited to get going into this episode in this in this show. We’ve got some news to break down. We’re gonna hit up some of that QB carousel. And like we mentioned last week, we’re gonna start kind of going through some of the, you know, maybe some of the prospects they’re kind of setting the stage for where we’re kind of looking and seeing and some of the things that we’re excited about as we start approaching some of these Film Studies and continue going through some of the film studies. But let’s go ahead and hop on over into news and some sad news coming out yesterday, and this one was one that probably the best football player to ever come out of our alma mater there Kevin. You know, the UNC bear. Longtime NFL player Vincent Jackson was found having passed away. So some sad news coming out their thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family. JJ Watt was released. The Falcons reports coming out of that camp that Todd Gurley will not return to the Falcons in 2021. Tom Brady is set to have some offseason surgery looks like he’s trying to take care of some knee issues there. Patrick mahomes. The report reports on his surgery, say they went very well. Washington football team signed Taylor hanaki to a two year deal. Trevor Lawrence is looking to have surgery on his non throwing shoulder. So Kevin, what do you make of the news?
Kevin 04:29
I guess first and foremost, the Vincent Jackson news. I had I had the pleasure of working out with him. While I was in high school. He was using UNC at that time, but we were doing kind of an offseason training program together at one of the facilities here on the west side of town and that was really the first and kind of only interaction time set that I’d had with him but super, super nice guy talking to a couple folks who Were a little bit older than I was had some time with him in college, nothing but great things to say. He was always very kind. He never had his ego out in front of him. He was, I think he was a four, four or five time nominee for the Walter Payton Man of the Year in his nine seasons in the NFL. So he was all about giving back to the community and and doing things the right way. So prayers go out to his family. And we wish them all the best in this tough time. Outside of that news, which kind of caught me off guard today when I was reading about it, I went holy crap. So outside of that, I think the JJ Watt thing was expected, right? We’d heard rumblings that him and the Texans kind of wanted to mutually part ways. And so now it’s the landing spot, right? Like, where’s JJ Watt going to fall? There’s rumors about a bunch of different teams, rumors about Cleveland rumors about Pittsburgh going and playing with his brother, which is where I think he’s gonna end up I think he’s not, I think he’s to the point in his career, where he wants to have a little bit of fun. He wants to play for a team that’s challenging, that’s getting into the playoffs. And that Pittsburgh defense is already built around. So he’s not going to be asked to do everything that he had to do for the Texans. He’s just going to ask to go in help lead the locker room, and really be that consummate pro that JJ Watt has been over the course of his career. So my money’s on Pittsburgh, but we’ll see how that shakes out. And then Trevor Lawrence had surgery this morning, all things went well, was kind of cool. How Urban Meyer was so involved in that, right like a lot of people were kind of wondering how this was gonna play out. And then you dive into a little bit more in urban had a hand in when this first Trevor Lawrence only pro day was, and then the actual Clemson pro day is in a month. So they were able to work that out just for Trevor Lawrence. They helped him get it scheduled, understand the timetable, so that way he can be in rookie minicamp after the draft. So if there was any question from the 1% of the fan base, who didn’t think he was going to Jacksonville, I’m pretty sure that’s cleared up Trevor Lawrence is going to be a Jacksonville Jaguars. And we shall see how the dynamic between Trevor and Urban and this rebuilding franchise works out for them, but best of luck to him when we wish him a speedy recovery.
Derek 07:34
Yeah, absolutely. I was just one of those that I had the pleasure of watching Vincent Jackson, my freshman year in college, he was he was in his last season there at UNC. And that was there was a guy that just brought it every single game in game out and was really a joy to watch. Moving on to the JJ Watt news, I also think that you’re probably onto something, I think that he’s going to do one of two things, right, he’s either going to go to Pittsburgh and play with both of his brothers. And if he doesn’t do that, I think he’s going to sign kind of a sweetheart deal, like we see happen in some of the other leagues, where he signs a very team friendly deal to chase a ring. As far as some of the surgeries go, I think a lot of these other surgeries were expected. I don’t know that. You’re really going to see a lot come out of that. Most of these things were, you know, cleanup tuneup type of deals. And you’ll see these guys back you know, as good or if not better, the coming year. Alrighty, let’s go ahead and move on over to the quarterback carousel. We’ve got some retire rehired new hire, and we got the same list of guys. We’re gonna run through those and we’ll hit up if anything’s changed for you or not. Start with the the big name there. Deshaun Watson retire, rehire new hire,
Kevin 08:52
I still think Watson is a new hire. And I know this is kind of cooled off here a little bit, but that’s kind of how the NFL news circuit goes. You have this news teams, you know, take the field questions, right, whether you would or wouldn’t would you do it for this? And then it kind of quiets down as you get in this dead period a little bit and then it’ll ramp up around draft time. And I’m not sold at all that deshaun Watson is still a Houston Texan. By the time the season begins. So I have winces and excuse me, I have deshaun Watson excuse me, as I tie myself I’m trying to say that I have to Shawn Watson as a new hire.
Derek 09:34
I think I’m going to go with with rehire. I just don’t think that the Texans are going to get the package that they feel is appropriate for a guy very much in his prime young quarterback that is really going to be a franchise guy for many years to come. So I see him back playing with the Texans next year. Although I don’t know that he’s gonna be very happy camper doing Carson Wentz retire rehired, new hire.
Kevin 09:58
He should be A new hire. But after knowing what the Eagles are asking for Carson Wentz, he is going to be a rehire and he will stay in Philadelphia unless they open their eyes and realize that he is he is not a coveted quarterback buy 20 other NFL rosters there are one or two teams that will look to do something with him. And outside of that they’re gonna kick the can down the road and spend their money elsewhere.
Derek 10:32
I think I do think that he’ll be a new hire. But I think that the the Eagles will come to the realization that they’re not going to get anything near what they think that he’s worth. And I think that as you start approaching that season and you’re looking at we’re going to be paying a guy. Yeah, all of that money to to potentially be sitting on our bench and being a backup. Because you saw that last season and with very much controversy between Jalen hertz Carson Wentz and all of that and I think that the Eagles are ready to move on and see what Jalen hertz really has for them and see what they can do. But I think what you’ll see happen is that the Eagles then package a Zach ertz contract and Carson Wentz contract and shipped them off to another location and just to get those guys off the books so they can they can start looking to kind of rebuild that team a little bit. But yes, reports coming out that the bears offered two seconds for Carson and the Eagles were having no go on it. So very interesting to see how this one pans out. Jameis Winston retire, rehire new hire,
Kevin 11:39
rehire. And it’s gonna be tricky, because the saints are in salary cap, hell right now. They are like $70 million over the salary cap heading into the 2021 season. So there’s gonna be a lot of different things that they have to do. They started by restructuring, Drew Brees his contract back on, I believe it was February 6, so instead of a $36 million hit, now it’s looks more like $23 million. But if he decides to retire, basically what they can do is they can keep him on the roster and designate him as a post June 1, retire, slash WAV, if you will. And what that does is it takes that $23 million, and it splits it between 2021 and 2022. So that’s, it’s a way right for them to save like 24 $25 million, whatever that looks like of cap space. So that’ll take a third of it away. But they still got a lot of things to do. So they’ve been able to kind of dance around it and finagle in the past. And I think they’ll find one more way to do it. It’s probably not gonna be pretty, but I do think jamis is back in New Orleans.
Derek 13:00
Yeah, you’re probably right. I I don’t see him going anywhere else. I think that they’re gonna have him back and have them be their quarterback. But I think that’s also going to depend on how a lot of that works in those offseason talks between him and and Sean Payton, on how big of a role taysom Hill would have in that offense. And you know whether he’s going to really be the guy or if it’s going to have to if it’s going to be somebody else. It can be a split thing. If there’s a chance of it being a split thing. I think he’s out though.
Kevin 13:28
Yeah, there’s a good possibility in that. If he does not go back to New Orleans. One thing I want everyone to keep an eye out for is the Carolina Panthers. Yep. They don’t have a whole lot of money invested in Teddy Bridgewater. They’ve kind of seen how that experiment went. I don’t think they’re in love with it. jamis provides and we talked about this before the st side right as a place that he could go is Carolina. I’m not giving up on that. There’s still a ton of weapons in Carolina. They have Christian McCaffrey to take a big load off of James’s right arm. But he also has Robbie Anderson, Curtis Samuel and DJ more to give him those outlets to throw the ball to if he learned anything under Sean Payton and under Drew Brees, you would hope it would be how to manage the football more appropriately, and not just chuck it in effort, if you will. So I do think that’s a sneaky, fallback option if the saints can’t find a way to resign him.
Derek 14:32
Although you talk about two options for him to have down down the field throwing ability to in both DJ Moore and Robbie Anderson. That could be a lot of fun a lot. A lot of interesting things shake out there. I do believe credit Samuel is a free agent as well. I don’t think that he’s going to be back I think he’s gonna sign for more money than what the Panthers are willing to pay him and he don’t retire, we hire new hire.
Kevin 14:55
I’m gonna say re hire. I’m sure he’ll catch on somewhere as a backup role. He didn’t show great in Dallas, but he’s a veteran quarterback who’s been to the playoffs. He understands what the day in and day out routine of an NFL quarterback is. And as long as he’s comfortable with that role, he will continue to find jobs very much the ryan Fitzpatrick route, right, like you had your chance as a starter. But if you can just be comfortable and happy playing football, and you don’t get out over your skis, for lack of a better term, there, there is always a home for a veteran quarterback in the NFL who’s willing to take a team friendly deal to just play football. So maybe if and I don’t know Andy Dalton’s mindset, but if he is of that same mindset as a Ryan Fitzpatrick ish, there’s going to be a home for him somewhere else. I don’t think it’s Dallas, because I think all their quarterback money is gonna end up to a guy here that’s later on this list.
Derek 16:00
Right? Yeah, I’m, I’m still holding out that I think Andy Dalton may end up in a place like New England that is looking for quarterback play looking for something to try to transition as they retool and re gear up that roster. And Andy Dalton could be that kind of guy. But I think you’re right. He’s a guy that did not play well enough during deck going down to earn a starting job back was a guy that really had the opportunity with a ton of weapons around it. And that team just kind of disappointed down the stretch. But let’s go ahead and talk about the the guy that you think all the Cowboys are going to spend the money on and that’s Dak Prescott, retire, we hire new hire,
Kevin 16:45
is a rehire. I do think that because of this injury, the Cowboys are going to try and play the business card, right, they’re going to have a little bit of leverage that they’re going to try and play on this. But ultimately, if all else fails, I do think that they will put them on a franchise tag. And either which way Dak will end up signing that he’s not gonna turn down that much money. So I have him back in Dallas as a rehire.
Derek 17:12
Yeah, I would agree with you. It’d be interesting, though, to see how how those contract negotiations play out him coming off that injury and the Cowboys really looking very poor in his absence. Mitchell trubisky retired, rehire new hire,
Kevin 17:29
pre hire, I still think he’s going to San Francisco. Like I do think that’s just such a Kyle Shanahan thing to subtly stick it to the bears twice. First time for all the draft picks, second time for the guy that the bears coveted so bad and find a way to make it work. The Jimmy g experiment is over. Mr. Biscay is cut from the same cloth. But he’s not going to demand a monstrous contract. He’s going to allow them to continue to build around that defense. His overall weapons in San Francisco would be better between ioq and depot, as well as a robust running game around moster. Jeff Lawson, Jr, Tevin Coleman jerick McKinnon, who I don’t see coming back, but he’s still on the roster at the moment. So that’s where I see Mitch personally, so he would be a new hire for me.
Derek 18:28
Yeah, I see him being a new hire as well. I think the time in Chicago has come to a close. But it will be interesting to see if he’s able to go to a team that’s able to develop some some QB. That could be an interesting thing there. There’s a reason he was drafted second overall. So to be very interesting to see how this one plays out. But I do think he’ll be on somewhere else. Cam Newton retire, we hire new hire,
Kevin 18:54
retire, I think Cam Newton showed that he’s just about spent his arm did not look good. He’s not running as much part of it may be by design. Part of it may be because he was trying to prove something. Part of it may be because he’s just taking so many licks in his career that his body’s just not quite holding up the way he’d like for it to. I don’t see him getting any sort of a starting opportunity after his performance last year. So a new hire is a possibility if he’s willing to take a real team friendly contract, but that’s a really big personality for your backup quarterback. And while New England has their ways of being able to absorb that there’s a lot of franchises who don’t, and I don’t think many will be willing to bring him in and deal with that personality or that type of personality out of a backup quarterback.
Derek 19:51
And I think that’s I think you probably hit the nail on the head and that’s that’s kind of where my thoughts are as well as that. I think he’ll I think he still wants to play I think he’s still capable of playing. But I don’t know that he’s able to play at the level that we’ve seen, you know, when he was an MVP caliber player, I don’t think that that’s that’s his role anymore and what he’s able to do on the field, and you can call it a myriad of different things, whether it’s that the New England system wasn’t set up for him to do well, there, the lack of receiving options out there in New England, or the fact that he very well just may be done. But he’s a guy that I don’t think that you’re going to bring in and to play, play the backup role anywhere and be successful. Long term with that, I just don’t see that happening. So let’s go ahead and move on over to Ryan Fitzpatrick retire, we hire new hire,
Kevin 20:46
new hire, I have Fitzpatrick most likely, I think he’s going to Indianapolis. Like I just for some reason, that really just seems to kind of click with me, going to a team that plays indoors, and they have warm weather road games. So he’s not out in the elements a whole hell of a lot. He’s with a team that has a very solid defense, he’s going to be asked to hand the ball off to Jonathan Taylor quite a bit. And he has a decent receiving corps around him or at least the beginnings of right between a Paris Campbell and a Michael Pittman. Excuse me. See why may or may not come back? We don’t not quite sure there. They still have Zach Pascal under contract for one more season, I believe. So there’s a lot of advantages for Fitzpatrick to go one more run, go in with a contender see what he can do, and kind of go from there.
Derek 21:43
Yeah, I think you’re right. I think he’ll be a new hire somewhere else. I don’t think that he’s going to come back to Miami to be the change of pace bullpen quarterback so to speak. I just don’t see that one happening. But I think he still has a very strong desire to play and still has the ability to play at a very high level. Jacoby brissette retire, rehire new hire.
Kevin 22:05
Jacoby will be a new hire somewhere. I think he is finished with his time in Indianapolis. They might want him back. But I just don’t see that as something that he would want to do. possibly going back to New England, possibly fighting for a job in San Francisco. There’s a couple different things you could see him doing. But overall, T is going to be in a different uniform in 2021.
Derek 22:35
Yeah, I think you’re right. And I could very easily see him ending up in either Chicago or New England is where I kind of see him going. I think you’re right, new hire somewhere else. And we’ll see what that comes to play. Drew Brees retire, rehire new hire,
Kevin 22:52
retire Brees is done.
Derek 22:53
I’d agree with that one as well. We are very quickly entering draft season, lots of pro days coming up, some of them already happening. Some news starting to come out about these prospects and what teams are thinking. So as we start really kind of diving into film study session season here, Kevin, what are your what guys? Are you really interested and excited to watch some film on? And really, who are you kind of you’re looking to have a very interesting draft season,
Kevin 23:22
I want to see how Jamal chase looks, being a year removed from football and not playing at LSU this past season, and still being touted as one of the top two wide receivers in this class. Right. And there’s an argument that he was a better receiver than devonta. Smith. He just didn’t play and it’ll be interesting to see how his pro day looks. See where he falls. I think he’s gonna end up in Detroit. But we’ll see how that looks. You could also see him possibly go as early as three, you could see it in Miami needs wide receiver help. So you could see him go as early as three to Miami. So he’s a guy, I want to see if he’s in shape. I want to see if he took care of himself. I want to see what he did with his time away from football. So that’s a big one that sticks out. And another thing that I’m really looking at is trying to figure out who the second quarterback off the board is. We know that we know that we know. Trevor Lawrence is the first overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft like the Jacksonville Jaguars should already be trying to come to contract negotiations and just saying all right, what do we need to do to get get you signed that gets you into camp so that way we’re not dealing with this later on. But outside of that, is it Justin fields? Or is it Zach Wilson, who’s number two and do the Jets take that or do the Jets give Donald one last run and pass pass up the operator To hear for their pick, essentially of quarterback. So I’m interested in those two big things right off the top. As far as the running back position goes just because we’re staying fantasy relevant, right is I, I want to see Travis et ends pro day, he had very, very high expectations heading into the 2020 season at Clemson, and didn’t really meet those part of his because Clemson was walking through teams, but etn you don’t know if he’s a workhorse back like he was never asked to touch the ball 15 to 20 times he had 10 to 12 touches and that was it. And he’d have his 150 yards and two touchdowns. And that’s it. So I do want to see how that plays out. And I also wanted to see it does nausia Harris go in the first round, which I think he does. But How high does he go in the first round, because he he’s Derrick Henry, but catches better coming out of college. So take that for what you will like, Henry has been a great running back, especially here the last three seasons and what he’s been able to do but nausia Harris comps very well to Derrick Henry, but he does receive a little bit better out of the backfield. So, those those are all things that I’m highlighting, at least at the top of the draft board. And seeing kind of how things shake out where did these guys landed, and what that really means for the top four or five, maybe six rounds of fantasy drafts, because everybody else after that does kind of fall back behind. But if you go in the top two rounds of the NFL Draft your fantasy relevant instantly.
Derek 26:50
Yes, very much. So I’ve got the same question mark, you do as far as you know, it’s, it’s as much of a secret that Trevor Lawrence is going to be the first pick overall, like Joe burrow was going into last year, or Kyler. Murray the year before that, like there’s, there’s just some things that you know, and that’s that seems to be one of them, right, you know, without knowing kind of thing. But the question then very much is Who is that? Who is going to separate themselves as that second quarterback off the board. And while Justin fields, you know, has the pedigree for it. He’s a smaller guy. So it’ll be interesting to see how his pro day goes and really diving into some more film on him. Zach Wilson, the guy that didn’t necessarily play against a tough a bunch of your real tough competition in his college coming out of BYU. And then your trade lanes is another guy that’s picked up a lot of steam going through it. But again, a guy that didn’t play against a ton of, you know, upper echelon talent in college, as well as the fact that he’s only played one season in, in the FCS. So it’ll be really interesting to see how those ones come to play. As far as the running backs go. I’m very interested to see, you know, you mentioned both etn and, and Harris, both of those guys will be great. I think in year one and for fantasy, a couple of guys that I’m going to keep an eye out on and what does that look like is trouble Hubbard and Trey sermon. Both of those guys are interesting there and I’ve got to do some more film study but chumba Hubbard seems like a guy that if you if he can get a lot of room he can flat out just fly and go down the field but seems like he runs up right a lot and is easier to bring down so not necessarily something that you’re looking for. outright when a with an NFL running back trace sermons, a guy that I get to see early on in his college career he plays played his first couple of years over in Oklahoma then transferred over to OSU this last year. Yeah, I’m interested to see what that what that looked like for him. But he’s a guy that I think has a lot of ability and could be very big. Maybe not this year, coming into it. But probably in year two is kind of a guy. I’ve been looking for a breakout year to running back type of thing. Same questions you’ve got as far as the wide receivers there. I think Jamar Chase is the bigger body more complete wide receiver. But I think devonta Smith is probably I think he actually probably has a little bit more raw talent out there. He’s just very undersized. That’s 61 and 175 pounds, whereas your mark chases your six foot 200 plus pound wide receiver so there’s a lots of things that come to play there. And both of those guys are guys that are gonna be looking at very interested watching the pro days and going back through and watching some more film on. But yeah, it’s very interesting to kind of think about when you look back to last year and some of the wide receivers and the and the really good wide receivers that we had come out and last draft class. And you think back to two guys that came out of both of those guys’s school where Justin Jefferson came out of LSU and was a guy that wasn’t necessarily picked up on and you know, it was kind of a ho hum draft pick as far as it kind of seemed when it got down there when the Vikings took him in the back half of that first round. Same thing to with devonta Smith. He is a guy that Jerry Judy and and Henry rugs both came out of Alabama last year. And so it’ll be interesting to see how those guys’s kind of rookie year stacks up to the predecessor coming out of the same school the year prior. So that’s kind of a something to think about down the road that I’m interested to see how that comes to play.
Kevin 30:43
Yeah, I think one thing and each player is their own. And just because of past instances doesn’t mean for future success type deal, right? Like right LSU has been pumping out NFL caliber wide receivers, Jarvis Landry, Odell Beckham, then you had Justin Jefferson, like they do a good job, bringing that type of wide receiver for whatever reason into the program, and then turning out stars. So
Derek 31:15
DJ chark was another one
Kevin 31:17
in charge. Yep, absolutely forgot about him. So. So there’s the pedigree is there for Mr. Chase, as long as he took care of his body, and did the things he was supposed to do. He might truly be the can’t miss wide receiver. This season. Now Alabama has had their fair share of quite great receivers to starting back with Julio, you have Calvin Ridley, Amari Cooper, and then you had Judy, you had drugs. And now you have a waddle, who’s another guy that we haven’t spoken about at all, just seen how Jalen Waddell does and his pro day, there’s going to be a very well represented Alabama, wide receiver core in the NFL, they’ve been pumping them out as well. So it’s something I’m looking forward to. And I think all of us will look forward to on our fantasy rosters as well.
Derek 32:14
I would very much agree with that thought and sediment. Be very interesting to see how this plays out there. But any final thoughts for the listeners?
Kevin 32:23
No, just stay tuned. All right, like, we’re gonna get into coach peak, Coach speak season, about the draft about what they’re doing what they’re not going to do. So just do your homework, don’t take one interview and one press clipping snippets as gospel, look into some different avenues, try and see what they’re doing, especially if you’re doing some sort of a daily fantasy game around the draft. Or if you’re just studying up getting ready for the fantasy football season, like it is more than just Well, he said it. So it has to be true. It’s it’s not the case this time of year, there’s a lot of things that are going to be tossed out there and thrown up on Dart boards that, quite frankly, don’t mean a damn. So do your homework and stay tuned.
Derek 33:10
Absolutely. My My favorite thing about this time of the year, and as we really will progress into next month and into April. My favorite thing about this time of the year is the player comparisons that start coming out. And this rookie is how they’re compared to an all time greats and all of these things as they start going into the draft season. That’s something that I always kind of get a kick out of, because some of the comparisons are just so far out there that that they just don’t make sense. But But everybody’s quick to try and pump up a guy that they’re high on for the draft and compare him to a to a Hall of Fame. caliber player. So always very fun to see and interesting to see how that one comes to play. So Kevin, I think you’ve got some very sage advice there, right? Like, make sure that you’re really going through and listening to what is out there, not just from one source, but from multiple sources and, and do your own homework with that one as well.
