Intro  00:05

You’re listening to the good old boys fantasy football podcast. Now here’s your host, Kevin, Derek and Alex.

Derek  00:13

Alrighty. Welcome in ladies and gentlemen to another episode of the good old boys fantasy football podcast. I’m Derek and I’m joined as always, by our co hosts, Kevin and Alex, guys, how are we doing tonight,

Kevin  00:24

doing good man got through the divisional round, or excuse me the conference championship round of the playoffs and had totwo pretty good games overall of the packers and buccaneers game was was back and forth. And ultimately, the Tom Brady’s pulled out another one and he’s back in another Super Bowl. And then you had the Kansas City Buffalo game, which Buffalo came out like a cannon right, forcing that early turnover, jumping out nine nothing. And then the floodgates opened, and Patrick Mahomes unleashed a can of whoop ass because bills can’t cover a tight end to save their life. But it was entertaining. It was a good weekend, I was gonna be happy with whatever the Superbowl brought us out of that 14 mixture. But I think this is kind of the matchup that the country wanted to see. And whether it’s a changing of the guard type message that goes along with that or whether you want to see Brady get a seventh or you want to see Mahomes eclipse Brady down the road, but get one over him in the biggest game. A lot of fun storylines are going to be had we’ll get into that later on. But it was a good weekend. And it was it was a good way to wrap up the the second to last meaningful weekend of the NFL season.

Alex  01:43

Know, it got played to death and talked about to death. But it was really fun to see kind of the old guard in the NFC versus the new young pups in the AFC kind of gives a little glimpse of probably what we’re gonna see for several years, at least on the AFC side. And then on the NFC side. It was kind of a swan song, if you will for those guys. Especially even going back to kind of the divisional round with Drew Brees and, and Tom Brady facing off. And then Tom and Aaron. That was That was fun. It was good. Entertaining football. Like you said, Kevin, it was. I mean, you kind of knew that. The Bills, it just felt like the bills didn’t ever really have anything going. And then I thought a pivotal point in that game was the first time that they elected to kick a field goal, towards the end of the first half instead of trying to get a touchdown, and I was watching it and all I could think was you’re going to be down to scores. If you get the field goal, you’re down to scores already. Why not go for it, you’re on the road, you’re in the championship game, you’ve got nothing to lose. If you just go out there and try to you’re gonna have to outscore that offense. So I thought that conservativism that can conservatism by the bills was kind of the writing on the wall from that point on that that they weren’t going to be winning. So I think looking back there was also that controversial, you know, go for it on fourth down or not in the Green Bay game. So I just think that there were there will definitely be some offseason coaching questions in the cities of Buffalo and Green Bay, but that that will be certainly not in terms of like will the head coach get fired, but definitely questioning the playcalling and that’ll be what’s gonna be tying them through the longer offseason now.

Kevin  03:40

Yeah, LaFleur is getting absolutely lamb blasted by everybody. And both both losing coaches blinked. Right. They were in the biggest game of the season. And they blinked and they went conservative. Instead of trusting their MVP caliber quarterbacks to get the job done that they have been actively doing and doing very, very well all season long. And both of them blinked. It definitely had more implications seemingly in the Green Bay Tampa Bay game because it was so close to the end, right. And Green Bay never got the ball back when they had seven and a half minutes or so when they kicked that last field goal. Buffalo. I think they were just trying to get some momentum in their favor, right? They jumped up and then Kansas City came out, started putting up points they were just trying to save, save something and neither one panned out. Both teams would have been better off going for it in my opinion. Yes, hindsight is 2020 but specifically for Matt LaFleur. And the Green Bay Packers. You have the MVP of the league. You are on the eight yard line. And there is no guarantee that you are getting that close again, you might get inside the 30 you might even get inside the 20th your defense could find a way to hold Tampa maybe get another turnover, whatever. But the chances of you getting inside the 10 yard line again, were microscopic like that. Absolutely minute chances. You had to go for it. Like you really just did. And he blinked. Young coach maybe. Who knows maybe he really thought his defense was doing something right forcing those turnovers with Tom Brady in the second half thinking that they’d get another crack at it. But you know, when you’re that close guys, and it’s all in the line, you got to rock out with your jock out essentially. Right? And and you got to go for it. And he blinked. And that was a very pivotal point at the end of that game.

Derek  05:28

I Kevin, I do like the hindsight there. Well, we’ve also got some foresight coming at you right now we’re we’ve got a fantastic episode for you. We’re gonna run through the results of our three players stack. We are joined by Chris Pinto from Belly Up. He’s here. He’s gonna be joining us. fantastic guy. We’ve had him on the show last year. I’m sure you all remember him. He’s going to be chiming in here. We are going to run through some more recap on this conference, championship game. We’ve got some news, some notes, some injuries, all that good stuff to hit up. And then we’re also going to hit up on the Super Bowl storylines that Kevin already mentioned there and talk about some of our favorite storylines coming up there. But Chris, how you doing?

Chris  06:09

Man? It’s, I’m here, right? Obviously, it’s great to be on here. Good old boys, man. I think y’all were like my second podcast when I came into the industry allow me to come on and spew my Bs and I’m forever ingratiated you guys. So I love being on here with you guys talking to you. It just feels like I’m at home. Right? So love it, man. love being on here with y’all.

Derek  06:32

Awesome. Well, we appreciate you taking the time and coming on with us again, guys. As far as our three players stack goes. Alex kind of walked away with this one and walked away with it handily. He had the team of Kelce. And

Alex  06:47

that’s it. That’s all you need to say. I have a team of Kelce. That’s that’s pretty much.

Derek  06:52

Yeah, yeah. Travis Kelce outscored my entire roster I put together and came awfully close to outscoring Kevin’s entire roster to the point where you needed to have one other dude, the Jad on your team put up three points to to win that one. So congratulations on your pic of Travis Kelce. Yeah, so

Alex  07:13

eventually, you guys are gonna wise up and stop letting me pick first and then stop letting me pick first in the easiest category as well. That’s gonna happen one of these days. But until that happens, I’m going to keep taking advantage of the opportunity. You guys have presented me and hopefully keep winning all of these things.

Kevin  07:31

Yeah, we might have to start changing things. But yeah, it’s good to know. Because what were the one of the last things I said to you last week was Kelce is going to go ham in this app. And it was very much industry wide, right? Like that was no hidden secret. A lot of people were saying that. So it’s not like I stepped out on some huge limb. But I definitely agreed with what people were saying in that manner. And it seems like everybody got that memo except the Buffalo Bills. Like everybody on the planet knew that Mahomes was just going to force feed Travis Kelce the ball and the Bills were the only people who had no clue what the hell was going on. Like, just watching it just shaking your head like guys, jam him stick someone online double him. Like if you double him and double tyreke make Michael Hartman try and beat you make Sammy Watkins appear for the first time all season long, right like Demetrius Robertson, like pick a guy that’s not named tyreke hill or Travis Kelsey. And, and they couldn’t even do that. It’s like Alright, guys. Well, on to the next one. That’s why the chiefs are in the Super Bowl. Right? There’s too many weapons and they couldn’t stop. I guess. Is he still baby? gronk? Right? Is this this Kelsey still carry the nickname baby gronk. Like that might be something for a later day. But just just thinking about that. Because he did he went ham. Absolutely. Congratulations to Alex. And it didn’t matter. It didn’t matter who I drafted. For wide receiver when I picked first after you took Kelsey, I was kind of going through any combination, and I wouldn’t had you and I had the best running back that week. And I you know, Diggs fell flat for me, he didn’t get in the end zone. But still, when you get production like that out of the tight end very much like this season, fantasy wise as kind of a little bubble, right? If you were able to get your hands on Travis Kelsey, and build even a semi solid roster around him. He took you really really far because he was that much better than anybody else in that category for fantasy football, like he’s putting up quarterback type numbers from the tight end position. That’s just really, really, really hard to make up that deficit every single week.

Alex  09:45

He’s going to be one of those interesting cases as we head into next year, that I think, you know, kind of how I viewed Lamar Jackson or Patrick Mahomes going into this year where I don’t think that you’re ever going to over Reach for Travis Kelce whether or not he can do what he did again this year. And if you’re in a tight end premium League, obviously like Travis Kelce, pick one on one but I’ll be curious as things play out in a tight end premium league if he puts up what he did this year Kevin one on one for sure.

Kevin  10:18

You don’t hear that too often. That’s all right. Right. I think a one on one you’re thinking McCaffrey, you’re thinking

Alex  10:22

right, you know, maybe a Saquon

Kevin  10:24

here, Pat Mahomes. Like something like that. And yes, TE premium does it carries a huge ton of weight. You just don’t hear that too often. Right? Take Kelce with the one on one you’ll be alright.

Alex  10:35

But that’s so that’s going to be interesting to see how things kind of play out this offseason with you know, will the recency bias be too much? And will people be devastated as they were if they took say, like Zeke this year? Who again, Zeke was fine, don’t get me wrong. He just wasn’t a game changer game breaker for anybody. especially towards the end of the year. Well, after that got hurt, but, and that was something he couldn’t control. But I just think it’ll be interesting to see, you know, kind of what the stock of Travis Kelce is as we go through this year. And, I mean, the dude’s gonna be a first round pick. Once you get to draft time in August, it’s just a matter of where where can you get him? And what what do you think his values were? I’ll tell you right now. I’d take a Travis Kelce over maybe one or two receivers, but davante Adams if Aaron Rodgers comes back, and maybe like oh, I don’t know. A God what God one was great. Atlanta. Ridley Ridley Yeah. You know, I like those are guys that I’d have to really weigh my options here going into next year, depending on who’s throwing the football down in Atlanta, that I you know, Travis Kelce is a pretty safe bet when it comes to making a draft pick in the first round. That’s just crazy to think about.

Chris  11:52

I mean, just have positional, like that positional win you know that Travis Kelce is the tight end one and the drop off between him and whoever else is so massive compared to all the other positions that it’s people really needed. Look at Travis Kelce, in that first round.

Alex  12:08

Just a pro tip if you are planning on playing Kevin at any point in the season, grab Darren Waller because he will go bananas up against Kevin. Any any time that is on on the opposing roster against Kevin will Kevin defend against that in draft Aaron Lawler this year? That’s the big question.

Kevin  12:27

I don’t know but i i have Kelce at 109 and I’m not a big tight end guy like I have gone through this. I’m not a big tight end guy. Wait on tight end wait on tight end. If you’re going after one, you go after Kelce and you and you grab him back into the first round 109 if you can get him to slide to you at you know 1011 or at the turn like snatch him up and call it good. There’s enough overall depth at wide receiver that you can make that up. You can wait on quarterbacks so you can go running back tight and tight there at the back end of the first round and come up with a very good base to start your fantasy football draft. We will have tons of coverage on this as we get into the offseason. But early on I’m telling you 109 is about right off Kelce right now.

Derek  13:16

I can tell that I am definitely the the outspoken one here because I don’t have him as a first round guy. I’ve got him early second. So it’s not far off. But I’m talking probably the 15th 16th overall pick. So kind of that mid that mid second round is about where I see him going when redraft time actually rolls around.

Alex  13:36

Politely disagree.

Kevin  13:37

Well, the only reason I can see that happening is because the emergence of so many of these young running backs right? If you believe in what the Colts are doing with with Jonathan Taylor, he’s a guy who’s going to go inside the top 10. Now, if you believe in what the Ravens were showing with JK Dobbins towards the end of the season, he’s arguably back in RB one guy right we drafted worse running backs in the first round this year. Remember Joe Mixon and Josh Jacobs and I was on the Jacobs bandwagon. We were pounding the table as potential back end, first round guys to get your hands on and so Dobbins isn’t another guy who could potentially be up there. So I see what Derek saying it’s a possibility and we will see how it all buffs out. But I am starting to believe in that one player in that position and outside of Travis Kelce. I am still going to wait until around 910 11 for tight end like the gap is that big and I don’t give a shit I’m not chasing Darren Waller. I’m not chasing Mark Andrews. I’m not chasing Evan Ingram or Hunter Henry or Austin Hooper. Like throw them out there guys. I will wait. I will gladly wait and I will take my chances on streaming whoever the Dallas Cowboys have or you know, is it O’Shaughnessy or Zach not Zach Ertz, Tyler eifert in Jacksonville now that Trevor Lawrence is pretty much officially going down there, like I’m gonna be looking at those tight ends even like to provide a little bit of pop and security. So the gap is that big. I can see it either way, but he’s definitely going in the top 15 like there’s not a draft where he’s not going to go in the top 15

Derek  15:18

Yeah, that I can prescribe to. So, guys, we do have Chris here and want to get some of his thoughts on some things. So you know, the first thing I got to know Chris, first thing I got to know how did your fantasy teams fare this year?

Chris  15:37

So overall, like if you want to percentage, awful, awful. And I’ll tell you why. This is the first time I’ve been behind the curtain right on the industry side. I played in a lot of leagues like when you hear about a lot of leagues being like 1012 2030 4050 Well, your boy played in 63 besides basketball, so percentage wise, not so good. I learned a lot. And that was the thing. It was a learning experience. I played in a lot of different leagues rdps tight end premium leads, keepers dynasty, all all sorts of stuff. I’ve opened up my repertoire right my portfolio essentially, but I will tell you this, I took home something a lot of people having a trifecta. I won a home league that I’ve been in for about four years, a work league belly up sports, and then an industry League, which was a tight end premium legality. My I was the 12th overall as the last pick 112 Travis Kelce, two Dotto one. Darren Waller tied in premium League, took me all the way to the championship. And one shout out to the fancy coaches and Steven puntata for hosting that one. But yeah, it’s been experience. Really fun time. My fantasy, overall experience, awesome man, learned a lot. I know who I’m going to go get. And I know it’s all about zero wide receiver all day, every day.

Kevin  17:03

Very good. I can subscribe to that mainly because I’m generally on the bandwagon if you load up with running backs early and often. And you just keep loading yourself up. So I I’m all I’m all for it. So, Chris, now that we’re done with the season, right? We’re getting into the offseason, whether it’s you know, working on rankings or content or whatever, what what are yourself and just the belly up guys in general, like what do you guys working on? What do you have coming out soon that we can stay tuned and kind of keep a pin in to check out and subscribe to? Yeah, for sure.

Chris  17:40

So we’re doing a lot of different things. This year, we did the belly up bowl by St. Jude right? We donated money to St. Jude and ran a tournament from belly up sports. Obviously we’re doing that next year, it’ll be year two. So to me a little bit bigger. This year, we had 12 $100 donated to St. Jude. So next year, we’re looking to double that. Hopefully, we’ve turned our podcast that was just straight belly up fantasy live fantasy football every Wednesday into now a dynasty podcast. We will be on all sorts of all the pods, all the pod apps, you know, Spotify, iTunes, I Heart Radio, podcast, all that kind of good stuff. We’ll be out there doing dynasty stuff right now. Ryan and Billy are my co hosts are working on dynasty rankings right now. Tom, our hot takes guy right now. He is actually working on marketing for us and helping us with belly up sports in general. myself, I’ve dived into more fantasy sports. I’ve kind of taken over the reins. It’s just the fantasy guy for belly up sports. And I’ve done now every Tuesday we’ll do a baseball show, a basketball show. And tonight we just debuted hockey before I came on here with you guys. So just kind of diving in all that. Thank you so much to manscaped for sponsoring us and believing in so thank you so much for that. Other than that really just working on winning more championships next year. I took three home this year. Next year, obviously, I’m gonna dial down the amount of leads I’m in and build that percentage up more, and also daily fantasy. I took a pretty good chunk of money home this year. Next year, I want to televise that and kind of put it out there in the universe, right?

Kevin  19:18

No, absolutely. I think daily is kind of the one thing that we didn’t as a group, right that we didn’t do as much this year year one. We talked about that. a decent amount and not a ton, but we definitely brought it into our weekly show and this season. It just didn’t quite fit the direction that we were at at the moment. But I know Derek and I were talking it’s just something that I think we’re going to try and step back in and pay more attention to be able to give some more insight on just because, you know, with the daily side that doesn’t stop after week. 16. Right. You’re able to carry that through the extra four or five weeks of the season and and really give some guys a chance to you You might have missed out on your fantasy championship but here’s the way to make your money back. Right like here’s something that you can do to still say that this was successful. So awesome. I look forward to it. Hockey man, more power to you. Like I’m sure Alex could do one on hockey. And Derek and I would just kind of be sitting here like, you know, the stupid kids in the corner with our dunce hat on because I can follow it enough to kind of understand it, but there’s no way I’m comfortable speaking towards fantasy hockey and saying yeah, that Russian dude whose name I can’t pronounce that’s the guy you want.

Alex  20:32

Probably ends in Ov. Yeah. Which is which is really sad because you guys live in the state where the best actual hockey team resides so so that’s a little shame you guys should jump on the Avs bandwagon because it’s gonna be a fun ride. It will end in heartbreak undoubtedly like last year, but it will be a fun ride getting to that heartbreak Chris,

Kevin  20:56

I look up an Avs score they lose so I just don’t pay attention to

Alex  21:00

seven to three tonight I put up they kick the PAT in the second period. So it’s it’s happening. Chris, you touched on it a little bit there about what you would what you’re planning on doing next year. But if you could go back in time to Chris in 2020 nevermind everything else that happened but what piece of fantasy advice would you give yourself? from Chris in 2021 to Chris in 2020

Chris  21:25

it’s gonna be a heartbreaker guys. Pass on JTT in the fourth round, because I was all about Jonathan Taylor. I Jonathan Taylor touchdown is what I call them, right? invested a lot. The offensive line was there to the defense was there. Frank Wright that I knew very little about the OC was there, they’re gonna run the ball you saw they did with Marlin Mac, and then Marlin Mac, you know, you’d never want to see it. You never want to whatever but the narrative was there JT had the Kareem hunt narrative. He was drafted by the team to be an every down back and was not the starter went down and jtt got pushed in there. And then you got frickin Trey Burton and Zach Pascal running on the one yard line to score you touchdowns when you wasted. I’m sorry, when you use it when you use a fourth round pick on Jonathan Taylor touchdown, and he’s not scoring you touchdowns. So with that fourth round pick, instead of Jonathan Taylor touchdown. I would have probably taken out of nowhere, James Robinson and had to pencil him in.

Alex  22:31

I could have given you a James Robinson advice. I wish I’d listened to it myself. Oh,

Chris  22:35

God. Dang it. Alex, come on. Give it to me.

Kevin  22:38

The good thing about Jonathan Taylor was when when you got into the homestretch, right, so from week, what 13 on, he really stepped up. So when you got into the fantasy playoffs, if you were someone who managed to kind of sit on that you were able to weave through the season a little bit played on the waiver wire tried to make sense of what that was, but towards that last quarter of the season. If you still had faith in Jonathan Taylor, you had a pretty good playoff run. Just with him alone. Like he was putting up crazy good numbers. I think what he ended the last three weeks he was running back one running back five and running back to or something like that. So the Colts definitely finished him on a hot hand. So yeah, I you know, I did the same thing with cam Akers. I took cam Akers early, thinking that he was going to really usurp himself as the lead guy in the LA Rams offense. And well, was I right? By seasons and kind of when he stayed healthy, but good lord, you had to sit on him for 11 weeks to find out that the kids actually electric and no matter how bad Sean McVay wanted to run a multi runningback system, that Rams team was just so much better when Cam Akers is back there, so I feel you they hurt the first half of the season. But if you kept your face, they did pay off in the end.

Chris  24:05

I know y’all heard this because it’s always in the back of my mind. I don’t know if it was Troy Akmin or Tony Romo at the beginning of the season. They were televising or they were commenting and you know, whatever they do on the game being ballers and they said this year is going to be totally different. Because no otas there’s nothing like that. So these rookie running backs especially will take time to develop but we will see them develop. And every week in my mind, I’m like, Oh, this is about to be the week. And then finally when it happened I was like, why didn’t you guys just tell me what’s gonna be the double digit numbers I’m gonna pick these guys so soon.

Alex  24:38

Sounds like Tony Romo and or Troy Aikman was listening to the podcast. Yep. Same story that we were preaching all summer long.

Derek  24:46

And we were we were preaching that story about six weeks before the season started. So we were definitely on that one and had that call going. So well the reason just keep tuning in

Chris  24:56

this or Wait, wait when you tell the story. You get to build a narrative.

Derek  25:00

I like it.

Kevin  25:01

That’s true. That’s true. For the rookies, we hammered it though Justin. Justin Jefferson was the one we missed right? Didn’t didn’t quite see him going bananas the way he did. But outside of that I feel really confident with the you know, with what information we had and we’re sharing with with viewers and listeners about how to draft rookies and how to treat them coming into a crazy season now. All things you know Fingers crossed, knock on wood, you know, whatever good vibes you want to you know, try and spew out there. We will see rookie minicamp we will see otas we will see training camp in the NFL this season and we will have a much better, much more diligent perspective of how this is going to play out comm fantasy draft time in August of 2021. We shall see how that pans out but God It has to be better and more information than what we saw in 2020.

Alex  25:55

For for all of the dynasty players that are looking at the rookie class, the senior bowl is still happening down in Alabama they are forging ahead, they are going to do they had measurements as we record this on a Tuesday night they had measurements, they had their first practice. That game is on Saturday. So Saturday after this episode comes out. It’ll be on the NFL Network. That is your first look into what these guys kind of look like coming out of college so that just a pro tip if you’re in tune with the rookies that are coming out and again, not all of them, it’s just graduated seniors. There will be some big names that won’t be there. But it is it is where you can start to make some hay here in the in the offseason by getting your eyes on these guys the first time. And there will be there will be some dudes down there. I mean, they got Naji Harris to go down there. So it’s gonna be a good way for you to see. And also some guys that aren’t on the national stage week in and week out a chance to get your James Robinson out of the bunch. That’s a chance for you to identify that guy early on. Or your James Robinson type I should say as as there’s only one senior scouting bowl happening this year, and it’s going on right now. Is Trey Lance there. He is not because he’s not a senior so he’s only a junior, right? He’s a redshirt freshmen. This would have been his redshirt sophomore year, third year. So no because he’s not a graduated senior. He is not eligible to participate in the senior bowl. You guys I read on the bio train Lance. Bam. That’s me. Because I used to live in Fargo I covered North Dakota State. So I went to Carson Wentz his pro day. I know all about Trey Lance. He’s the real deal. He’s gonna be a project in the NFL, he’s not going to go right away. It’s gonna be tough right away. Because he’s played behind arguably the best offensive line in the country. I would, I would argue that against several sec schools that NDS use offensive line. Now I know they weren’t going up against sec defenses, but he was playing behind what will be a second round left tackle. I don’t think he’s gonna have a first or a second round left tackle or whatever NFL spot he goes to. But but he’s the real deal. He’ll be he’ll be very good. Because he can run it. He can throw it and he’s very, very impressive off the chart. He’s unbelievable. his freshman year, he didn’t throw an interception. He’s crazy. It’s crazy. And then

Kevin  28:32

he’s gonna end up down in Houston. His replacement for the shot Watson?

Alex  28:36

Probably he could be and I’ve seen him I’ve seen his name floating all over the place in these fantasy drives. A lot of a lot of people know a lot about him because he has 1617 games of game film. That’s it. That’s it. That’s all he played in college was 17 games, like nice. Oh, it’s very tough. Unbelievable. Yeah, it’s gonna be tough. These guys are really gonna have to do their homework on him and watch his workouts and his pro days and it’s there’s going to be some growing pains going to the NFL, but he’ll do Okay,

Derek  29:09

so we’ve got lots of great info coming at you through our socials. Make sure you’re subscribing there. You can find us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, at good old boys FF, we’ve also got a new thing that we’ve been working on. And debuting tonight we’re gonna we’re gonna break that out. We are launching the website, good old boys ff.com. You can check that out. We’ve got rankings up there. We’ll have lots more content rolling that way as well. So make sure that you’re hopping over there and checking that out. But guys, let’s go ahead and hop over into the conference championships. We already touched on that a bit there. Any other thoughts that you guys had coming from conference championship week.

Kevin  29:49

The strength of the Green Bay Packers let them down at times, especially in the first half in their secondary King got torched. In the first half, they played better in the second half force and three Tom Brady interceptions. But it is absolutely clear that with Aaron Jones being out, that team does not have the same identity on the ground, right? It’s just not quite the same when Jones went on the sideline with chest, chest contusion, right. And between that and they need a second receiver, that’s that’s worth his weight in Green Bay to take a little bit of pressure off. Aaron Rodgers and Davante Adams have a great rapport. But I think they were going to that well, a little bit too often. And and Tampa Bay was keying in on that. And then you have mSv, who’s dropping passes. Allen Lazard, who’s tripping over himself trying to get open. The one the one mismatch that I thought the Green Bay Packers could have played on more that they didn’t, wasn’t actually using Robert Tonyan. A bit more. He had some flashes there in the first half. And then the second half, particularly about middle of the third quarter on Robert Tonyan was just a non factor. And it wasn’t how Tampa Bay was choosing to rotate coverages. That was a route combination slash Aaron Rodgers function of, I have to get the ball to davante Adams because he’s the only one that I trust completely. And I think that did show up a little bit. And outside of that, I think Derek, you touched on it was the old guard in the NFC and the new guard and the AFC. And, you know, we’re gonna continue to see this coming of age with these young, young, really good group of quarterbacks in the AFC Mahomes and Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson and Joe Burrow, and Trevor Lawrence, who’s going to end up in the AFC right, like, all these guys are, are very talented, where you’re going to see a lot of battles in the AFC coming up. And so where predominantly, the weight of power has been kind of on the NFC side. Historically, the AFC has been consistently getting better quarterback play, right, and it goes all the way back to Manning and Brady, right Manning and Brady on the AFC side, carried that and then you had Roethlisberger flash and then you had Joe Flacco flash. And then you have one little stint of while Russell Wilson and Aaron Rodgers are good in the regular season. Their their playoff records don’t quite Hold up, right. They’re just not quite able to get past that hump. So it’s kind of on to the next one and Josh Allen took his shot. He tried but that Kansas City defense confused him. It was the first time all season long that Josh Allen really looked confused and flustered. And I think a lot of that’s just inexperience, right. That’s not being in a game that big. It’s learning. Learning how to lose, right? It’s no different than all a lot of the greats had to go through that right MJ had to go through that in basketball, LeBron had to go through that Peyton Manning had to go through that. Tom Brady’s The one who seemingly didn’t, but the construction of that team allowed him to not have to worry about it. Because that team was just so dominant defensively, in his first, what, five years, six years as a professional starter. So a lot of good things to come. The games were awesome. They were fun to watch. But now we’ve turned the page to the greatest game in the past decade, arguably, right? And that is going to be Brady Mahomes. For the for the Super Bowl.

Alex  33:43

I know we’ll get into Super Bowl storylines here towards the end of the show, but just to touch quickly back on that AFC Championship game. After the Chiefs had taken the lead for the first time. You could just see that that Josh Allen’s throws were just not on target. Right. He was missing high. He was missing low. He was being pressured the game all of a sudden sped up for him. And, you know, I made the comment as I was watching the game, I was like this game is done because he’s rattled. And he I don’t know that he has the wherewithal to come back, you know, to to come back and try and slow the game down again. He did okay, you know, it wasn’t a complete and total embarrassment. But it was after the Chiefs came down that it was after that, you know, 50 yard run by Michael Hartman and that chiefs get into the end zone with relative ease. He’s missing throws left and right. And to your point, Kevin, you know, you have to go through those growing pains. It’s, you know, you’re gonna you’re gonna go through them. You know, Patrick Mahomes hasn’t really had to go through those growing pains. But he got to sit and kind of watch and see, but you’re gonna go through those and hopefully it makes him a better quarterback on the other side. Hopefully he doesn’t get the yips after this. And loses all confidence. But it it was very very evident that the moment got big for Josh Allen there in Kansas City and and it was unfortunate to see a guy who had been so good all year kind of get rattled a little bit and and really it allowed Casey to to run away with that one. On the other side. Oh man, I mean, how much fun is it to see these guys doing what they’re doing at the age that they are? To show you a you know what’s possible it gives gives you hope, right? And I know we’ll talk about Super Bowl storylines, but this is this one hits close to home for us. And I’m still trying to decide who I’m rooting for in this game. Because a I don’t like Tom Brady, but he’s coming around now that he’s not on New England for me and b i don’t like the Chiefs because I’m a Denver Broncos fan, which is also the reason why don’t like Tom Brady. So I’m trying to figure out who I’m rooting for in this Super Bowl. And I know we’ll get to it, but I’m sure you guys have thoughts on it as well. We’ll talk about that later in the show. We’ll talk about it later but

Derek  36:05

it’s like it’s an easy call for me

Alex  36:07

it’s not hard it’s a very difficult call for me.

Chris  36:11

Yeah, my two cents on the on the conference games, man. I’m going to start with the buffalo in the Kansas City game just because this game was the late night game right? And all y’all are extremely right. And y’all obviously did your due diligence and watching the film and looking at the numbers and everything like that. But Josh Allen over the regular season of the year, right quarterback wanting PPR formatting because caught balls, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, exceeded expectation by about 80 points in his fantasy world realm. That’s super good. We saw him develop as a quarterback this year, right, ascending into about a 45% increase from last year. Now his decision making didn’t have to be tested that much during the regular season. But during this this game that we obviously saw against the Kansas City defense was a little bit of touch of old Josh Allen being a Houston Texans fan. I’ve seen Josh Allen crumble before you know throw the you know, lateral and nobody behind him so I know that’s what he’s capable of. So this game really didn’t surprise me too much when I saw that Chris Jones was getting after it. And the honey badger was all over the field. Right. The linebacker play was extremely well by Kansas City as well. And what is I mean it’s no discredit to Josh Allen because if he would have a true You can even call it like a running back for on his team. He would they would be in the Super Bowl. The debt the Buffalo Bills have like zero running back play right? You got Zack moss, who a lot of fancy analysts touted to be a year but obviously got hurt and didn’t play in this game. But Devin Singletary, who they use a lot of draft capital on has not been a running back to or done really anything to help Josh Allen or you know, have a running back presence in there. I’d really like to see an Aaron Jones type Bella in Buffalo and let Josh Allen win this AFC for once. The age difference obviously to between these quarterbacks in the AFC and NFC y’all keep we keep mentioning it in the NFC or I’m sorry, in the AFC the quarterback age range, I believe was like 24 and a half. And then in the NFC It was 41 really ridiculous. I’m really excited to see Patrick Mahomes Andy Reed back in the Super Bowl. Patrick Mahomes have a chance to win his second and Andy Reid having a chance to win back to backs when that couldn’t happen back in the day. On the opposite side of that right the NFC teams now the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau super favorites versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and TV, I’m going to call them three because not only do you have Tampa Bay you got Tom Brady, but you also have Todd Bowles. And Todd Bowles man is extremely smart. Defense wins championships. Right. And you have some outstanding linebackers, first and foremost for this Tampa Bay defense because we can say as much as we want about this offense, we know they’d have they’ve got three wide receiver ones. You got playoff, Lenny, and you got the goat right now. Right. But this defense by Todd Bowles is playing lights out. You got Devin white Levante David, who are just pillars in the most events. No one’s running up against these guys. You got in dama can sue, who now are starting in the playoffs is the only player in the playoffs to have 10 k snaps excluding his quarterback Tom Brady. They’re thrilled. They’re extremely smart. They know how to win games, and they get vetova back this week. Both the safeties are going to be back this week as well. You got Whitehead and Winfield Jr. I’m sorry. They’re both coming back extremely healthy for this game. The defense is going to be phenomenal when I started in this and I knew that Tom Brady was signing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and what Bruce Arians can do, I’m going to give a little, a little sneak peek to my pick at the end of the show. But on May 25 of last year, I call the Tom Brady would be in the Super Bowl this year, because no huge no hosting Super Bowl team has ever been to the playoffs. And I’ve defended this weekend and week out because I was like, you know, I’m gonna take a lottery ticket on this because it just makes sense. This is the season that happened. I cannot wait for Tom Brady to keep the torch.  Vikings were close two years ago they made it to that NFC Championship game last affiliate. They were close to host being the first team to to host a Super Bowl if you will host in air quotes. But yeah, that’s another really cool thing that I’ll dive into in a second. Alright guys, let’s go ahead and move on over to some news. Some notes some injuries going on lots of things happening around the league. Cole Beasley is reported to have a broken fibula. Matthew Stafford and the Lions have agreed to part ways the 40 Niners have signed running back. Jeff Wilson he was a restricted free agent to a one year deal. Eric Fisher tore his Achilles in the conference championship game so he’ll be out for the Super Bowl. Greg Olson has announced his retirement. The Lions have hired Nick cerini Vance McDonald, announced his retirement and Philip Rivers has also announced his retirement. So guys, some news happening there. What are your thoughts? Real quick thing because I only have one thing to say when I saw this, y’all can dive into everything else. The Eric Fisher news was so huge. I mentioned about Tampa Bay and Tom and Todd Bowles defense getting beat up a bad jpp and dama. can sue the secondary right. Well, Eric Fisher drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs had 113 starts in his Kansas City. Let me address two Pro Bowls a Super Bowl obviously, in his entire career, he’s only had 27 false starts. He’s averaged 6.56 penalties, a frickin year. That’s nothing. Right? And now you got to put a new guy in that position against a Todd Bowles defense. Bring in three guys in your face that you know are pro bowlers, Patrick Mahomes about to have a whole bunch of pressure up in his face. Levante David Devin white are going to be doing some exotic blitzing Carlton Davis will not get burned again by Tyree Hill for 200 yards in the first half, because that just will not happen. That was the biggest thing that I did. I took because Eric Winfield or Eric Fisher off of this offensive line. That’s devastating to this Kansas City offense.

Alex  42:44

That one’s that one’s gonna be tough. Real quick. Derek, you said that. The Lions hired Nick Sirianni it was the Eagles that have hired their guy. Whether or not that actually matters is is to be seen. I know at least it means that probably Carson Wentz is going to stick around in Philly. So he’s got that going for him at this point. I think the craziest part of all this was that cold Beasley broke his frickin leg in week 16 and continued to play through it in the playoffs. Like that’s crazy to me. Now, it wasn’t a major break. But still, the dude was playing on a broken leg. I even so much as think about stubbing my toe and I’m done for like three weeks so for obstacle Beasley for playing through a broken leg. Yeah, I

Kevin  43:32

was. I think everybody’s a little shocked to hear that with Cole Beasley so wish him a speedy recovery. He’s turned into a very very good asset coming out of slot right like he’s he’s kind of that next Wes Welker evolution, right. He’s just doing it for a different quarterback but Cole Beasley

Alex  43:51

mendola type.

Kevin  43:53

Yeah, like, you know, he went unnoticed for the most part leaving Dallas, right, two years ago. And everyone’s like, yeah, okay, we, you know, we don’t really need him. He’s done nothing but perform in Buffalo, right where, for the longest time, that’s where, you know, football players kind of go to die. They’re in the Jets. And it hasn’t been the case. Josh Allen and him have had a very nice rapport with Beasley coming out of the slot. He’s been very productive. So wish him a speedy recovery. Philip Rivers. Congratulations on a Hall of Fame career. I don’t believe it to be a first ballot Hall of Fame career, but I do think that a gold jacket will be placed upon his shoulders and he will see his bust in Canton at some point down the road. Matt Stafford as a Denver fan, I’m licking my chops. I am licking my chops and you shake your head no. Then you don’t know what you’re looking at when you’re watching quarterback play because Matt Stafford can play quarterback and if you get him on a team with some weapons offense that can actually stop someone every once in a while, and an offensive line that doesn’t completely crumble. And Matt Stafford will light the world up. So as a Denver fan, I’m licking my chops. I please, please, please. So that’s the biggest thing. I’m taking the Homer card this week. I’m saying Matt Stafford getting out of Detroit, trying to find a way that makes sense of what I think Denver should give up to get him in the orange and blue and take over the reins and be done with the drew lock experiment.

Alex  45:32

Our QB carousel this year is going to be friggin nuts. It’d be a lot of fun nuts.

Derek  45:39

It’d be a lot a lot of fun. Make sure you’re tuning into that episodes are those episodes coming up where we do our new hire, retire and rehire episodes. So that’ll be a lot of fun there. Alright guys, let’s go ahead and move on over we’ve got some Super Bowl storylines that we want to hit on. And guys, I want to know what’s your favorite storyline heading into the Super Bowl is

Kevin  46:00

Out with the old and in with the new.

Alex  46:02

Okay, so since I brought it up earlier, Who are you guys? I’m not gonna ask you to make a pick. We still have another choice or we can do that. But who are you

Derek  46:12

told it before the season that the chiefs are going to repeat? called up before the season? I’m sticking with it.

Chris  46:18

ampa Bay call it may 25.

Alex  46:21

Okay, since the team that I picked I think I picked Seattle. They that didn’t happen. I’m still struggling with it because I really I can’t root for that. Like I can’t in good conscience route for the chiefs. How am I a Denver Broncos fan? I can root for the

Kevin  46:38

raw I am rooting for Patrick Mahomes that has nothing to do with the chiefs. See? And that’s fair.

46:44

I am because

Kevin  46:44

for Patrick Mahomes because I I want to see Patrick Mahomes win his second and back to back more than I want to see Tom Brady win his seventh and that’s really where the skills are for me. It’s not a screw Tom Brady type thing it’s you know, we’ve seen this song and dance I want to see Mahomes win back to back before I see Brady when a seventh because of that daunting, AFC. And all these young up and coming really good quarterbacks. If If Mahomes and the Chiefs don’t win this year, it makes it really really tough. If he even thinks of having aspirations of trying to catch Tom Brady and Super Bowls,

Alex  47:28

he has to have this one. You guys know how Wayne Gretzky’s point totals are never gonna get caught? Like, what Tom Brady’s doing right now is the equivalent of what Wayne Gretzky did the NHL like that’s, that’s what we’re seeing in real time. You know, none of us were really around or old enough to really witness what Wayne Gretzky was in his prime. And what he did, but we are watching the greatest player at that position, play the game, at the best level. That’s what we’re seeing out of Tom Brady. And I on on very many levels can respect that. I think it’s easier to root for him instead of root for New England, and Bill Belichick and the cheaters that they are and yeah, I haven’t forgotten that. So I think you know, I just think there’s too much to it. I’m not gonna take a pic but I will say that I am I am rooting for Tom Brady. And it’s probably just because I can’t I can’t stomach rooting for the chiefs. I just can’t do it. It’s not I can’t do it. But I think Tom Brady, you know, this is there’s so many cool storylines going into this one. Tom Brady, the Buccaneers playing at home, the first ever team and 55 years of the Super Bowl to do that. And while it’s a crying shame that Denver can’t get a Super Bowl because we totally could have hosted a couple of those years. 9899 I just, it’s cool. And you know, it’s, it’s cool that they get to play at home. You know, I saw a picture from I think it was schefter where they had to practice. All of the Super Bowl signage was up on Raymond James Stadium as the Bucs are practicing for the NFC Championship. So, I mean, the goal is there, they saw it, and they were able to get it done. So I think that’s probably my favorite. But obviously, the changing of the guard has got to be the only storyline that everybody’s got to be talking about the old school versus the new school, the the goat versus the up and coming baby goat, if you will, like it’s it’s really, really fun. And I genuinely am looking forward to watching this one.

Chris  49:40

Tom Brady has played in 66% of championships and he’s been he’s been a part of right. No, like you mentioned, no one will ever hold these records that he has right. There’s a few that could be broken. But with him winning this Super Bowl, we’ll put a lot of it out of the reach a big thing that let me ask you guys this when, obviously all of us have seen the great film in the 80s The Karate Kid, right? everyone’s seen it right? wax on wax off Daniel son. Now when you watch this movie, and you think of the title, The Karate Kid, do you think of Daniel Russo? Or do you think of Johnny Lawrence of the Cobra Kai dojo?

Alex  50:26

He is he Barney Stinson? Easy. Barney Stinson? I’m

Chris  50:29

saying, because I’ve been a I’ve been a Johnny Lawrence fan for a minute. Daniel Russo cheated. First of all, I mean, he stole a black belt. Okay, we’re not going to go into all this and him being a thief. And then also using a illegal move against Johnny Lawrence, the

Alex  50:48

illegal if you ever speed that’s illegal. Do you get caught? No, not illegal. Go ahead.

Chris  50:55

Well, I saw it. You know, I’m a good samaritan and I saw it. I seen it multiple times in the film, where Mr. Miyagi takes this belt black belt that someone’s earned, and puts it in his pocket. Now, what do you think about that guy who spent the years and the blood sweat and tears to earn that black pill? Regardless, we’re not talking about that. We’re talking about Tom Brady.

Kevin  51:19

5.99 gets him another one.

Alex  51:20

That’s what I think. It’s a pretty solid piece of fabric probably head on down to tool. Hobby Lobby, grab yourself a new one and get yourself sewing kit. All right, get another one.

Chris  51:31

Okay, well, both you guys are on Daniel, the Russo side. Obviously Derek’s on my side with Johnny Lawrence and the Cobra Kai dojo. Look, Derek, look, what are you gonna do? You’re out. Okay, look, Derek, I’m gonna pitch to you. I’m not talking to your friends or your co host right now. It’s summertime, baby. You’re at the beach. You and your girlfriend had a little tussle? Because you know what? It’s summertime. You know? Love is in the air. You’re at the beach. She’s down there playing soccer and some new guy rolls up and he’s teaching her how to dribble. Think about it. Your her boyfriend previous boyfriend, captain of the soccer team. She knows how to dribble the ball. She didn’t need him to teach him how to dribble the ball. fraudulent right off the bat in the movie. Think about it. We’ll go watch the movie. They’re on the beach. And she’s like, how do you dribble and he’s like, oh, one need one neat. Oh, like this giant Lauren’s the captain of the of the of the all Valley soccer team. She knows how to dribble a ball.

Derek  52:36

I think if I’m on the beach with with my girlfriend, I got bigger issues at play because my wife is gonna have a whole lot of

Alex  52:44

questions if you’re gonna have that answer. wife’s gonna be very intrigued about this girlfriend situation that you get on a

Chris  52:52

Keep it football now

Kevin  52:53

Ms. Shannon gonna come after you and whoop you

Alex  52:57

She’ll have some fun.

Chris  52:58

Football. We’ll keep a football now. The Super Bowl will be won by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers because of the defense. And I’m cheering for Tom Brady.

Derek  53:07

While, I think Tampa Bay’s got the better defense and they’ve got that storyline going for him. And Todd Bowles is in a really good defensive minded coach in the league for many, many years. I think you’re I think you’re you’re onto something there. However, Kansas City has found a way just to win games. They haven’t necessarily, you know, one of them won a pretty A lot of times, but they’re finding ways to even win the ugly games. And that, and even with that, even with Tampa Bay, having that good defense, you still got to find a way to shut down Patrick Mahomes who can make every throw on the field and twice as many of those throws on Sunday. So the game still played on Sunday, he’s gonna make every throw on the field imaginable. You’ve got just an offensive juggernaut there and Kansas City’s defense. Well, not necessarily elite like Tampa Bay has been this year, they’re still awfully darn good. They make enough plays to allow that team to win. Some of the biggest things that I’m very curious about when you’re talking about this game, is the only teams that Tom Brady’s lost to win the Super Bowl have come from the NFC East. So it’ll be interesting to see if he can beat an AFC team, right? Like the only the only teams he lost to have been the Giants nails, both of those from the NFL east. Neither there’s none of those NFC East teams in this in this Super Bowl. So it’ll be interesting to see how that one plays out. Another kind of interesting one that’s just kind of fun to think about is the fact that you think about the the Pittsburgh Steelers from a few years ago, right and they had the killer bees and they had all of that come into play. Well, they’re in it. They’ve got to have the bees already in there, right both Antonio brown and LaBelle and left Bell made it to the Super Bowl on and they’ll be facing off against each other without a Big Ben in the mix. So That’s kind of another fun one to see how that’ll come to play and all of that. So, yeah, there’s a couple of things I’m interested to see.

Kevin  55:07

I think Kansas City is going to pull it out because of what Tampa Bay does best is stop the run right? You do not run on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Guess what Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes don’t give a flying leap. If you can

Chris  55:20

run the ball,

Kevin  55:21

stop the damn run. Guess what, we’ll get 45, 65 yards between our three running backs and we really don’t give a shit which one it is right now. Apparently, they forget that they drafted Edwards Hilaire in the back half of the first round. Overall, we

Chris  55:36

do have Williams last week shit,

Kevin  55:39

right. But what they do have is speed and speed, speed speed. And we saw that in week one. So what I think is going to happen is the safeties are gonna be playing a bit further back, right, they’re not gonna give up 200 yards in the first half to Tyreke Hill, but you know what, they are going to give up a shit ton of underneath stuff to Travis Kelce, just until the safety start creeping up to handle Kelce. And then you’re gonna have Hardman or Hill break out on a deep post, and then we’re gonna get you over the top. Kansas City doesn’t give a damn about trying to run the football in this game. Patrick Mahomes will throw the ball 85 times if he has to. And and they will be completely okay with that. And guess what, at 24 years old, his arm ain’t gonna fall off either. So he’s good for it. So that’s where I

Chris  56:28

Half a billion $ better be good for it.

Kevin  56:31

Right like, and that’s where I see the Chiefs have the advantage is because we’re the Buccaneers strength is on defense. Kansas City doesn’t give a crap about it anyway, like, they will run the ball to try and have some sort of balance, but they will not die on that hill, they will absolutely not done that. They’ll do a stretch play, they’ll try and run it up the gut, like you kind of saw where Green Bay had a little success with that right going right up the middle and not stretching it out where Devin White can get outside and go sideline to sideline. But right up the gut, there’s that little bit and so if they can get three and a half, four yards of carry if they can average three and a half to four yards of carry games over because they’ll be just even with the chains so you’re not going to be sitting in second third and long and being forced to drop it deep you know, 1012 yards every time on third down. If Kansas City only needs six, seven yards on third down five yards on third down, you’re not gonna stop them. Like there’s they’re too they’re too damn fast. They plant their foot in the ground and they go and that will cause issues for a Tampa Bay secondary that has been suspect the you know, throughout the year in their past coverage.

Chris  57:44

Yeah, I mean, Tampa Bay’s secondary has been got but also you’re completely right Kevin like Tony Romo broke it down and like whatever Patrick Mahomes does to Travis healthy the little shovel passes that can be supplemented for runs for two or three yards. They can do 50 of those this game and it would still be good.

Alex  58:05

We’ll have to we’ll have to revisit it but the initial line that I saw was 57 and a half and bucks favored by three and a half we’ll see what the money does

Chris  58:16

rather so with 7575 100

Alex  58:20

it opens up in 57 and a half bucks for three and a half point favorites. We’ll have to see what what the money does because I have a feeling at three and a half. There’s gonna be some money on Kansas City that number is probably gonna shrink.

Kevin  58:32

Yeah, this game will end up a pickup.

Derek  58:34

Well guys, any final thoughts for the listeners?

Kevin  58:37

Stay tuned. We got more offseason coverage more coaching carousels player breakdowns as we get into kind of an awkward combine season as these players go through their pro days which is also their combine workout for for 2021. So we’ll be breaking down some of those players as we hit some of the big schools and some of the little ones where you may or may not have heard some of these guys all Trey Lance, so stay tuned we’ll have some stuff for that obviously next week we’ll be breaking down the Super Bowl even further. Get into maybe we’ll get into a little bit of DFS and do a little showdown slate for the Super Bowl. Talk a little showdown there and try and get you some money to end the season off on the high note get you a little bit extra cash in your pocket. And then yeah, have a great week everybody.
