2021 NFL Free Agency and Rookie Prospects
Intro 00:05
You’re listening to the good old boys fantasy football podcast. Now here’s your host, Kevin, Derek and Alex.
Derek 00:11
Alrighty, Welcome in ladies and gentlemen to another episode of the good ol boys fantasy football Podcast. I am Derek and I am joined as always, by your co host, Kevin and Alex. We’ve got the band back together, and Kevin feeling pretty spunky. They’re coming in with the intro right there. I liked it. I liked it. I had to hold on to it longer though, guys.
Kevin 00:36
It’s kind of your thing. I just I’m just like trying to, you know, throw you a curveball every once in a while. But no, we’re good. I’m doing my part here from lovely San Antonio, Texas. I’m on the road for the J O B and so figured I’d bring the equipment down here. Why the hell not? figured we’d do a show and have some fun while we’re doing it.
Alex 00:56
I’m good. I’m good. Hopefully my Internet’s a little bit better than last week’s debacle. And we’ll be able to get through this without my voice freezing up or sounding like a robot.
Derek 01:09
But guys, we do have a fantastic episode for you tonight. In all seriousness, we’re, we’re gonna get to it, I promise. We’ve got some free agency to talk about. We’ve also got a lot of rookies to go through. And we started kind of touching on some of that last week. And we’ve been touching on some of the free agency stuff here and there over the last couple of weeks, but it’s time to get down to the nitty and the gritty with this thing. Lots of news happening out there on most of it all around free agency. And we’re going to go through that we’ll start hitting up some of the free agency. You’re kind of landing spots where you kind of think somebody might land where you hope that they might land. But the Texan started off the start off restructuring David Johnson‘s one year deal, which is up to about 6,000,00. 4.25 of it is guaranteed. The dolphins are expected to release Kyle Van Noy one year into his deal. Alex Smith is release being released from the Washington football team. Tyrell Williams is to be released from the Raiders. The Jets look like they’re going to release their defensive lineman Henry Anderson. Kyle Rudolph is being reported of being released from the Vikings. There’s lots of kind of rumblings going on with Russell Wilson and deshaun. Watson still, as far as some some of their camp goes, we’ll get into that a moment Jadeveon Clowney should be cleared from the surgery that he had to repair a meniscus. I do believe it was a meniscus. But that’s expected to delay his signing with the team a couple of weeks there. Orlando Brown is looking to be traded so that he can play left tackle. There are reports coming out to the Ravens are not going to pursue a wide receiver one and free agency. And we had the first official signing happen this week with JJ Watt going to the Cardinals. So guys, there’s a lot of information coming at you. What are your thoughts right now on some of the news with free agency? And what are we looking to expect coming out of free agency this week?
Kevin 03:07
It’s all pieces to the puzzle. Right. And I think there’s some really cool pieces that go along with this. I’m sad that Washington decided to let alex smith go after he was a big part of them getting to the playoffs one Comeback Player of the Year. But I’m really excited for Alex Smith in his next opportunity because I do think that there’s a couple interesting options for him to pursue in his next steps and teams that he can go to and help them win right away just because he’s very, he’s a very efficient passer of the football. He doesn’t take a whole lot of Gamble’s, he’s very accurate. He’s not as mobile as he once was obviously given the injury. But he showed that he can still dissect the defense. He understands what he’s looking at, and he can make plays when he has to. So I guess First things first, I think the bears are an interesting option for Alex Smith. And there is a connection with him and Matt Nagy there that I think that could possibly work. I also think that it is possible he could end up back in San Francisco. That one’s a little bit more of a long shot. And I understand that but the opportunity still exists out there. The David Johnson thing doesn’t really surprise me. The Texans have to do something like they can’t they just can’t let everybody go. Deshaun Watson‘s pissed off. Hopkins left last year Will Fuller‘s a free agent. JJ Watt is now a cardinal on top of the fact that they’re still in salary cap prison at the moment. So they’re going to have to be able to move some things around. I’m not quite sure how much money this actually freed up for them by restructuring his deal and extending it a little bit but I think here in the next 24 hours or so we’ll get some some info from over the cap and see what it really did with their cap space. So that’ll be good, man. So this is some odds and ends. Nothing big. Just JJ Watt, the big name right that he signed for the two year deal. And outside of that, just a little bit of pieces, right, we’re just moving, moving the deck around a little bit trying to see what frees up. But big things are coming free agency, when it opens up, there’s gonna be a lot of fun.
Derek 05:14
So Kevin, kind of looking at it the Texans right now with that move looked like they’re sitting at about 163 million in total cap going towards next year. You know, there’s, there’s a lot of estimates out there that the cap will be somewhere around 185 million, those numbers aren’t guaranteed yet. And they haven’t set that firmly. But that if it was about 185, that would leave them somewhere in the neighborhood of about 31 to $32 million going into next year,
Kevin 05:43
which isn’t too terrible, right? That’s enough that by the time you space that out and play with the money and everything, that’s not too bad. Um, the one thing that didn’t make our news notes that I’m going to bring up is the NFL should be reaching its new TV agreements here in the next week or two. And Money, money, money, money, money, money, money. There’s a whole lot going on with that there’s gonna be a lot of zeros. And I’m super excited to see how much football we’re gonna get to see on primetime television here for the next decade as Fox and CBS and NBC. The three really stepped up to the plate. Rumor has it Disney, and ESPN is kind of lagging a bit behind they’re trying to call the NFL’s bluff, but the NFL doesn’t care. And if they’re not careful, if Disney and their Corporation isn’t careful, they’re going to lose football, professional football altogether. So they need to be a little bit careful about that one, because I’m sure nbc cbs Fox would love to pick up the Monday night game and kind of revamp it a little bit. And I think it probably do good for viewership, honestly being on a mainstream basic cable network as opposed to ESPN having it.
Alex 06:55
So a couple thoughts on that. It’s not just NBC, CBS and Fox and Disney with ABC and ESPN. But you’re going to also have to consider players like Amazon Prime and other streaming services that are going to want to a little piece of that cash cow. So hopefully what it what it leads to is the death of all cable companies, which I am 100% on board with, I haven’t had cable for a long time you get an antenna, you’ll be alright, streaming services are great. So if
Kevin 07:30
you take my sec network away from you, I will say,
Alex 07:35
Hey, man, either get on board or don’t you can stream the ICC network. It’s part of ESPN. And that’s why ESPN is gonna have to I mean, that’s the future of television viewing is you’re gonna have to stream all this stuff. And whether you like that or not buckle up and get your internet you know, at a at a high clip. So that’s, that’s where I am with that. That’ll be very interesting to see what they what they do. I guess the biggest news for me other than the JJ Watt signing, which was kind of the fun, you know, where will he go? That was like the major free agent, you know, so far? Where Where will he end up to see Arizona was a little interesting. I think that’s a good fit for him. Obviously, that’s an up and coming bunch that I think was disappointing last year, but they’ve got good pieces, you know, obviously Kyler is good and D hopped down there and bolster up your defense a little bit and I think you’ll you you’ve got a pretty good shot there. Although that division is is murderer’s row at the top for the time being. And the one for me, though, was was Kyle Rudolph getting cut by the Vikings, which if you follow the Vikings at all last year, this was kind of the writing on the wall. He was his usage was way down. Herb Smith Jr. was obviously the the premier, you know, target focal point of that offense in terms of tight ends, it just seemed like this was going to happen. Honestly, I thought it would happen a couple years prior, but they kept bringing him back or you know, I’m like one year deals or short deals, just to have his presence around. But you talk about a guy who has a knack for scoring touchdowns and can be a difference maker in the redzone for any number of teams that would be willing to pay probably what’s going to be a league minimum for a 10 year that which isn’t going to be cheap. But that’s a guy that could that could make an impact in the right situation. So it’ll be interesting to see kind of where he lands in terms of free agency and what he does and you know, I know that he he kind of wrote a goodbye letter on the what is it the athletes Tribune or whatever that’s called. And I didn’t get a chance to read all of it, but I assume he’s still wanting to play football because you probably saw some good football left in him. And if he does continue to play, that’s a guy that that’s still relevant in my eyes in turn. of being a difference maker for a team, especially down in the red zone, the bears are always looking for another type and I’m sure he’ll fit in. Not just that that would really stick it to the Vikings too. So I mean, I could go one way or the other there.
Derek 10:15
The Bears, the Colts always seem to be looking for him to
Alex 10:18
well see in the Colts have a quarterback that loves to throw two big tight ends. So
Kevin 10:23
I tell you, I would love to, to crown Irv Smith as the tight end breakout for 2021. But I just can’t because Kirk Cousins does not utilize in this offense, right he did when he was with Washington. But since coming to Minnesota, he had one season where he really leaned on Kyle Rudolph. But outside of that, it just feels like he just hasn’t and there’s wide receivers that play a role into that. Right. You had Diggs, you still have feelings. Now you have Jefferson. So you have some pieces around there. But it always wondered why they didn’t utilize the tight end a little bit more, especially with Kubiak having so much influence over that offense. I think Irv Smith Jr. His numbers will pick up a little bit but I don’t even I mean, is he? Does he hit the top 12 for tight ends. Now that he has all that timeshare to himself. Are we still looking at something you know, mid level tight into and he’s just a streaming option?
Derek 11:23
That’s that’s actually a very interesting question. That was something that I wanted to get your guys’s takes on because, you know, the social media is blew up once that thing released that the Vikings were going to be moving on from Kyle Rudolph. And yeah, I saw it in several places on Twitter and Instagram and a new one that I’ve been poking around with with sports meme. But all of these apps, you had several several folks in the fantasy industry claiming that Kyle Rudolph is now our I’m sorry, not Kyle Rudolph, Irv Smith Jr. is now going to be you know, racing up the board, I saw one takes that he is a tier one type of tight end being that only tied in in Minnesota. And that’s something that I couldn’t get behind. I don’t even know that for me that that herb Smith is going to move up into Titan 12 territory. And the reason I say that is you look at Noah fan who finished tied in 12. Last year, hidden 93 targets and 62 receptions, that Vikings offense is not going to throw the ball to the tight end 90 plus times. I don’t see Irv Smith Jr, catching 60 to 70 balls, the way that they’re going to typically run that run that offense. And the way that that Kubiak run scheme and run first scheme typically takes place.
Kevin 12:46
He has tier one talent for tight end. Irv Smith Jr. was a beast coming out of Alabama he’s he’s a good blocking tight end, which is what Minnesota typically used him for his rookie season as he was looking to kind of get his feet wet. Last year he stepped out a little bit more. I have a couple shares of him in some dynasty leagues just deeper leagues but you know it was a shot got him as a rookie figured what the hell, we’ll see how it comes. And I’m hoping it kind of comes to fruition at least a little bit. But, guys, I mean, I tied in 1415. I’m thinking like I just like Derek’s point, I don’t see 90 plus targets headed his way. So unless he becomes the redzone darling, for Kirk Cousins, and the touchdowns can make up the gap there. You’re just not going to see the consistent volume that you’re going to want to put him in your roster week in week out. It’s going to be very matchup dependent.
Alex 13:44
Yeah, there are four reasons why I don’t think that herb Smith Jr. is going to be this, you know, everything tight end that people are expecting him to be and those four reasons are Dalvin Cook, Adam Thielen Justin Jefferson, and Kirk Cousins who doesn’t like to throw the football to the tight end, we’ve seen that now he had Kyle Rudolph and he he utilized him very well a few years back, and then forgot about it. And then he had two tight ends that he could throw to and forgot about it. You know, he’s got he’s got to feed. Justin Jefferson, he’s got a feed and Adam Thielen and the the Vikings, you know, in a perfect world, they’re gonna run the ball 50% of the time. You know, that’s what they want to do. So when they’re chugging along and working, you know, they’re gonna be a 50 if not even higher, you know, you want to get dalvin cook his touches and dalvin cook has proven that the more touches he gets in a game, typically the better off he is, the stronger he gets throughout the game goes or throughout. as the game goes, that’s the way to say it. But those those are the reasons right there that I don’t think that you know, Herb Smith Jr. is way down on the pecking pecking order when it comes to the Vikings offense and who’s getting used. And I just thought I see that those are very big, four very big roadblocks to him being a breakout tight end darling. All right,
Kevin 15:01
here’s one more for you just just for shits and giggles, Minnesota ran a three wide receiver, a three wide receiver set about 71% of the time. Now, they still love to run the football. But what they’re trying to do right is spread you out a little bit to run that. One it’s also doing is it’s forcing your tight end to stay in. Because you have the address you’re trying to tee off because everything spread out a little bit. It’s forcing the tight end to stay a bit more. Again, Herb Smith a really, really good blocking tight end. So all that adds in like, I feel like we’re all on the exact same page here. Like it sounds great. The talent is there. The scheme is not a good fit for what we would like for him to be fantasy wise. He’s a very good fit for Minnesota. Oh, absolutely. Just fantasy wise, he doesn’t, it’s not gonna, you know, spell success in this huge jump from tied in 26 all the way up to tight in, you know, eight, because he’s going to have 75 grabs for you know, 893 yards and 12 touchdowns. Like that’s just not gonna happen.
Alex 16:08
I would say for people to avoid, you know, thinking about it this way. Last year, you know, Kyle Rudolph, hardly played, I don’t have his exact, you know, stats in front of me, but Kyle Rudolph didn’t play all that much. And so it was kind of the herb Smith show for a majority of the season. And that’s what they got out of what the Aerosmith show was a majority of the season so and correct me if I’m wrong, Derek, I know you’re you’re frantically pulling up those numbers to help me prove my point, I hope but but that’s just you know, that’s that’s what that offense is even without Kyle Rudolph on the field, Irv Smith, Jr. was a titan 26 or whatever it was. So 22 Excuse me. So that’s I would hasten people to think that just because subtraction of one guy is not going to mean you know, more for the other guy. That’s that’s not the case here.
Derek 17:00
Right? It’s an addition by subtraction and just kind of stay on this point here real quick. You looked at Kyle Rudolph, right like that’s, that’s the guy that had to get out of the way for Irv Smith Jr. To be great. Well, Kyle Rudolph last year had 28 receptions for 37 on 37 targets for about 300 yards and one touchdown. So it wasn’t like Kyle Rudolph was really cannibalizing the touchdowns. For Irv Smith Jr. and for most tight ends, that’s where you’re going to make your hay and fantasy is in the touchdown realm to it. So for Irv Smith, Jr, who scored five touchdowns last year, which actually not a bad year for a tight end, he would have to scores in the neighborhood of about eight or nine touchdowns next year and catch probably 20 to 30 more receptions for about another 200 yards somewhere in there for him to firmly move all the way up into Titan 1011 type of range. That kind of production would put him similar to what Jimmy Graham did this last year who finished his tight end 11
Alex 18:07
Yeah, I guess the point that I want to make there is you think that just because Kyle Rudolph is vacating those 30 receptions or however many 20 perceptions, whatever it was, just because he’s vacating, it does not mean that it’s going to go to Aerosmith really what that does is open it up for adjusting Jefferson and Adam Thielen or even dalvin cook who’s a excellent pass catcher out of the backfield. More plays like that, I just don’t see that. Herb Smith Jr. gets that. That production, you know, equal to equal from what Kyle Rudolph had last year
Kevin 18:40
in the final four games of the year. Kyle Rudolph did not play so it’s right right. Smith’s show by himself. So small sample size, right. So in four games, Irv Smith saw on average 77% of the snaps he was on the field for he saw 19 targets for 15 grabs, that’s a hell of a lot. Sorry, ratio signage. Absolutely. So had those grabs three touchdowns on 170 some yards, 73 yards, so not terrible. 12 catches 173 yards and three touchdowns.
Alex 19:23
How many of that was in week 17? Kevin Do you know? Because like these, they were out of it. They eliminated from the playoffs conversation. So really, you know the games that they were competitive in was 15 or 14 1516. So at 717
Kevin 19:39
was his least productive three targets two receptions 30 yards. So week 16 was his best game of the season nine targets six receptions, 53 yards,
Alex 19:51
two touchdowns, that against the saints which that kills a shootout anyways. Y’all remember that Alvin Camaro went for six and that game, right?
Kevin 20:03
Yeah, right. So a bit of a mixed bag there. And maybe that small sample size means we’re being a little too hard on him possibly, but you’re gonna have to show me before I sign off on this guy’s like, this is not advice that we can soundly give based off of what we’ve seen how the offense tends to function, and has functioned over the course of the last three seasons. Just because now you have a younger guy in there, firm Smith, will at times fill in as that pseudo slot, stretch the field receiver, if they’re trying to do something a little creative, or even more, so he’ll line up outside to allow Jefferson or Thielen into the spot, or this slot. So there’s some creative stuff they can do, but it’s not going to be consistent. Like I think you’re going to see three to four targets a game, I think that’s pretty realistic. You can see a high side where he sees eight or nine in a game. And I think, you know, I think five to seven touchdowns is probably what you’re gonna get, you’re not gonna you’re just not gonna see him explode.
Derek 21:05
And I think for us if this is a guy we’re willing to be wrong about. And you’re gonna have those every season that you’ll have some guys you’re gonna be pounding the table for and you feel the need that you have to be right on. This is a guy I think for for all of us that were just willing, you know, he’s got the talent, but we’re willing to be wrong on where he’s gonna finish next year.
Alex 21:24
Yeah, I’m more comfortable looking elsewhere at the tight end spot. And you know, if he’s my backup tight end or you know, if you plan to tight end League, first off, what are you doing? But second off, if you’re in a too tight end League, like, I’m going to look elsewhere for a guy that I’m relying because guys tight ends are sneaky points, man. They’re sneaky points in fantasy football. And if you’ve got a good one, you know, odds are you didn’t spend a ton of capital on that, and his returns are gonna be be much better. So guys,
Derek 21:55
there’s a ton of other free agents out there. And a ton of guys kind of kind of come into play. Before we get into that though. What do you guys make of some of the rumblings that you hear coming out of Seattle and coming out of the Texans in the quarterback room?
Kevin 22:10
Do it Russell Wilson’s going anywhere?
Alex 22:13
No.
Kevin 22:15
The Cowboys are going to resign Dak so Wilson is going to stay put. I still don’t think deshaun Watson is going to play a snap for the Houston Texans. I just I don’t see it. I know that the Texans are saying we’re not trading him but at the end of the day, they can find him they can be discouraged with him. They can you know, write him hate mail and then turn around and want to kiss him and make up. The Shawn doesn’t want to play there like his stance has not changed. He said it right after the season was over. He said after he met with the head coach. He’s been very clear in this. He is done in his time in Houston. They have rubbed him the wrong way. Bill Brian experiment lasted a year too long, and it soured his grapes. Unfortunately, because deshaun Watson’s a hell of a talent, it’s just a matter of who is going to come to Houston with a sweet enough offer to make them go. Okay, yeah, let’s let’s, let’s take this.
Alex 23:18
Okay. But think about, you know, a couple weeks back when we saw the deal with Stafford and golf, right. And the returns that, you know, Detroit got and what la got out of it, you know, that that I think put things into motion of what the Texans thought that they could expect. Because they have arguably one of the top five quarterbacks in the in the league. So that’s what you’re thinking you’re gonna get out of a you know, you’re gonna get at least that when it comes to a return. And then you see what the Eagles got out of Carson Wentz. Keep in mind, deshaun Watson is on a pretty hefty contract right now. So anybody that you know, is willing to take him on is going to take on his money. And that’s that’s not an easy sell. So I think if a deal gets done, it will be the Texans being closer to what the Eagles got in return for Carson Wentz, versus what the lions got in return for a Matt Stafford as far as you know, Russell Wilson. I don’t think you know, I know that he got his wish list of teams. But I just I don’t think that he’s going anywhere out of Seattle. I think that this is it’s a power play. It’s a please will you give me some frickin help on the O line? Can you please can we draft somebody or trade for somebody that will help keep me upright as I’m getting up there in age. And while it’s nice that he spends a million dollars a year on his body? I’m sure it would be nice to not have to spend a million dollars a year on recovery from taking all those hits. So I understand you know, his frustrations with it, but I just don’t see him. I don’t see Wilson leaving Seattle. And to Kevin’s point, I don’t see Watson playing for Houston anymore.
Kevin 25:10
Here’s the only counterpoint I have is deshaun Watson is worth way more than what the Eagles got for Carson Wentz.
Alex 25:18
Absolutely. I agree with that. But, but Watson has forced their hand in that they are no longer, you know, they’re no longer in a position that Texans are no longer in a position of, you know, in a position of power really, because you either get something or you get a player who’s holding out and not playing. So what do you want a contract for three
Kevin 25:41
years, though, like it’s not a one year and they’re screwed, like, I give the Texans defense like Watson has a lot of money on the table that he’s got to show up to collect. And there’s just he’s so young, he’s a top three, some people would argue more so just call the top five quarterback in this league right now. In his absolute prime. Why wouldn’t you like the Texans are saying no help. For first round picks?
Alex 26:10
Yeah, I just don’t think that they’re gonna dance partner.
Kevin 26:13
Two best players and two first round picks, like does this get us close? Like, if you’re the Broncos, our team of the week? Okay. I will give you Jerry Judy Bradley Chubb and two first round picks does that at least get me a seat at the table?
Alex 26:28
Whoa, boy, I would go on over Chubb. But, but they did just lose a pretty stellar pass rusher. So
Kevin 26:35
they did but bonds coming off of his injury and he’s got a legal situation that’s going on and everything else. So that’s why you give him the Right, right. Like that’s anything you give me. You’ve given you, Bradley Chubb. Jerry, Judy, to first Trump extra deshaun Watson, just for seat at the table. I don’t even know that gets it done, guys, but just what you would seat at the table?
Alex 26:56
I tell you what, if that’s what the Broncos did, and it prevented john Elway from drafting a quarterback in the first round for two years, I would take that.
Derek 27:03
Well, he didn’t have a really good one under contract for at least three to four. So you’d be fine, which
Alex 27:07
would be great. I would I would love for him to not waste a draft pick on a quarterback again.
Derek 27:13
So here’s kind of an interesting thought for you. Right like we’re talking about him potentially holding out and trying to hold the Texans your feet to the fire a little bit on on trying to get a deal done and have him traded out. But I think I’ve got to agree with you that he doesn’t have as much leverage as, as he thinks he might. I want to say just from the standpoint that I’m pretty sure next year the Texans actually get their first round pick, you know, they’re finally they’re finally back in the first round of draft picks. And they own that pick. If deshaun Watson doesn’t play for that Texans team next year. Do they even win a game? I would venture to say that they don’t they don’t have a lot of other pieces around. They’re not going to be any good this this next year even with deshaun Watson deshaun Watson there probably is worth five or six wins, it’ll pick up probably four or five six wins somewhere in there. So without him playing, they’re probably getting the number one overall pick in which they can then be looking for their next franchise quarterback at number one overall,
Alex 28:14
I was just looking up what the Texans who the Texans have a as far as their schedule in 2021 just to entertain this thought about, you know, would they go for and unfortunately, they draw the AFC South looks like it, it draws the NFC West this year. So you’re talking about games against the Rams, the Seahawks, you know, you’re not Cardinals, the Cardinals, which is interesting and funny in itself. And they also you know, they’ve got games against the Patriots, so they drew the AFC North as well. They do have the Jets on the schedule so yes, they will win a game maybe I forgot them Jason is no longer there.
Derek 29:08
But mistake on that. Adam Gase no longer there and the Jets have the second most salary cap available the most cap room have a second most capital room available in the league so and the number two overall pick so they could be big movers and shakers here. And you could see a much more revamped jets team this next year.
Alex 29:26
They do get Jacksonville twice. And well. I mean, I know that Jacksonville depends, I guess when those games are if that’s a week, one game could be interesting. Could be interesting, you know, Trevor Lawrence first game, that could be interesting.
Derek 29:40
So I mean, that kind of goes it just kind of leads me back to my question of if you’re right, if the Shawn plays great if he doesn’t play, the Texans have him under contract for the next three years and then at the end of that they could still franchise tag him. I guess the point I’m trying to make there is that he I just don’t see the leverage that he has in this situation. So Guys, let’s uh, let’s do a quick run through, we’ve got a fair bit of free agents out there and really kind of want to hit it more from a fantasy football perspective on this side of it. So when you’re looking at it, you’ve got a ton of wide receivers out there, you’ve got a ton of running backs out there, you’ve got a couple of quarterbacks on the market. Let’s just say that you could pick a landing spot for a guy. What, what positional fantasy player? Are you calling out to go to, you know, the best situation for them for fantasy next year? So kind of call your shot type of thing? Who’s the guy who’s the landing spot? For the best fantasy production next year?
Alex 30:46
I’ll take I’ll take the easy one. Just because I think it’s the most obvious. And while it may not mean, I don’t I don’t know if there’s going to be a lot of mouths to feed. But if if Kenny Golladay can land in LA with with his old buddy, Matt Stafford, I think that spells success. Not that Kenny golladay was was awful by any means in Detroit, but a few more weapons that would take you know, some eyes off of him in in LA, I think that that could be a very, very good marriage. If if the Rams can somehow figure out a way to get golladay on their roster.
31:25
And I think that does amazing things for a guy named Cooper cup. I get probably help with Kenny golladay.
Alex 31:31
I agree, I think with with with the other now the center there it it has, you know the phrase that we use last week, it’s a stressor on the defense when he’s on the field.
Kevin 31:42
I have a couple. So it just depends on how deep down this rabbit hole you want me to go?
Derek 31:47
Give us your first one. Let’s start there.
Kevin 31:49
Aaron Jones to the dolphins. Okay, I like that this is a big surprise. But it makes sense for both sides. It’s a situation where Aaron Jones can still see, you know, about 70% of the workload like not a traditional true workhorse back. But more more like what he was seeing in Green Bay see about 70% of the workload, they’ll see some passing work out of there. It looks really good. I’d like it more if tool wasn’t the quarterback. But you know what, Miami was able to be successful on the ground even with two quarterbacks. So there’s some there’s some things that could be done there.
Derek 32:31
And like Myles Gaskin and Ahmed, both of those guys a little bit undersized, kind of that Aaron Jones mold. And both of those guys had a ton of success last year. I love that landing spot like it.
Kevin 32:43
Another one I have is Kenny golladay. But I have him going to the opposite coast and going down to Jacksonville, to be Trevor Lawrence’s new play thing.
Derek 32:54
Yep.
Kevin 32:56
I think it gives a nice one two punch in Jacksonville between DJ Chark. And Kenny golladay. dollardays is a taller receiver, he has a bit of a broader wingspan and it allows chark to do some different things take the pressure off him and not be the true number one there. And it gives your rookie quarterback to Pro Bowl worthy wide receivers to kind of kick things off for his career.
Derek 33:27
Right. And you think about the like that also helps the viscous shuttled out quite a bit there too. And you’ve got to almost that gadget kind of guy that can primarily come out of the slot like that does big things for him too. I like that landing spot as well. Alex, I have a feeling that you’re really gonna like the one that I came up with. And I this is one of those that I’m thinking that this more and more likely will happen. But also, I think it’ll do some very good things for fantasy all the way around. And that is Alan Robinson heading to the Colts. So I think that’ll help out with Carson Wentz. He gets kind of that prototypical big body possession type of receiver that can just do amazing things, and really has a ton of talent. You’ve got the fact that you’ve got a ton of stressors that you’re able to put out there on every point of the football going down the field. So I think that would be a great spot for not only Alan Robinson, but also a great spot for Carson and Pittman and Paris Campbell and Jonathan Taylor.
Alex 34:31
And we’ve seen in the past that Carson Wentz can take an ex Chicago Bears wide receiver and turn him into a Pro Bowl player. I’ll Sean Jeffrey so I I’m right there with you. Actually I was going to look at Alan Robinson and honestly, my answer was going to be just get him the hell away from the bears. And I think we’re going to see success out of Alan Robinson who had a great season last year. Don’t get me wrong. But if he could go to the Colts, we know Carson Wentz likes to throw to the big body guys and and if he has even, you know remotely close to what the the chemistry that Carson had without Sean Jeffrey the first couple years, that’s that’s pretty good.
Kevin 35:14
Here’s an off the wall one for you, Chris Godwin to the Jets, I could see Burchard pyramid experiment was kind of put. Godwin has made it pretty clear that as much as he wants to stay in Tampa Bay, he’s not hometown discounting the Buccaneers, he realizes that there’s a lot of mouths to feed there. It’s coming off a pretty strong season not nearly as good as the 2019 season but a pretty strong campaign here in 2020. And I think he realizes now is when the getting’s good, so I, I’m just trying to think where somewhere he can go, he can be the number one option, some team that has a bunch of money, right. But I could see the New York Jets sinking a good amount of their free agent spending spree in on a true number one receiver and Chris Godwin would fit that bill.
Alex 36:13
I would just be you know, from his standpoint, you know, obviously, you’re going to be curious about who’s throwing you the football. And I know that, you know, I’m not sure how much that gets taken into consideration when these guys look for potential landing spots, especially when you’ve got a team that says we’re gonna pay you X amount of dollars, like, okay, yeah, I’ll run around, like, that’s fine. But I know these guys like to win as well. And whoever’s throwing you the football is very important. So I’d be curious if, you know, obviously, the Jets are gonna have to figure out what they’re doing at the quarterback spot. But if you know Godwin is gonna have a if he goes to the Jets, do you think he would want to be involved in those conversations as to what they’re going to do a quarterback by? Like, I know that he probably won’t. But don’t you think that that would be a huge hang up for for somebody on there?
Kevin 37:03
Um, if you’re like Davante Adams DeAndre Hopkins? Michael Thomas.
Alex 37:09
You think so? In that calendar? Not?
Kevin 37:12
Yeah, he’s not quite there. Right.
Alex 37:14
Right. Right.
Kevin 37:15
I don’t think and I think you can see it a couple different ways, right? There’s a lot of different things the Jets can be doing well, Sam Darnold return will he not? Like, who knows? At this point, it seems rather likely that the Jets will draft a quarterback and keep Donald there. At least for this year. Before they you know, kind of cut ties and let him walk off but it will be a little interesting. Um, where do you guys see Chris Carson going? he’s a he’s a Thumper of a running back. He’s done very well kind of quietly in Seattle. He’s very much been the heartbeat of that rushing attack in Seattle for the last few seasons and he’s come up here on the docket and I don’t know she I was gonna be able to keep him
Alex 38:05
and I know correct me if I’m wrong here girl he’s not around in Atlanta anymore correct? Correct. I don’t know if Atlanta has got the money to afford for a Chris Carson but that seems like it would be you know a fair offense for him to plug into that I think he would thrive and I love and that offense is gonna change I guess this year with with the new staff but
Derek 38:30
right but again, the same thing too with the Falcons. They’re over cap right now they’re they have to shed a lot of a lot of weight off of that cap to bring things to light but I don’t know that that Carson’s necessarily the fit down there in Atlanta, just from the standpoint that Atlanta likes to throw the ball and they’d like to move the ball through the air. And Chris Carson’s not really that guy that’s going to be coming out of the backfield catching 50 or 60 balls, that’s more of a type of guy that you would need there that would actually be a great spot for a guy like Aaron Jones to kind of go to and plug into a passing attack like that. But for me, I I probably see Chris Carson ending up back in a Seattle type of offense somewhere where he can be a run first type of team and and kind of just that Thumper and go along that way and there’s not many of those teams out there. Right you’re talking to Seattle is one of them. The Ravens are another one. Get the niners are kind of another one out there too, but the niners love their running back by committee approach and they’re not going to pay Carson the the type of money that he’s going to be looking for in the Ravens I think are very settled on JK Dobbins and Gus Edwards leading that attack.
Kevin 39:42
Here’s an interesting one for you. If the Pittsburgh Steelers are able to get Ben Roethlisberger his contract either restructured or they decided just to cut ties.
Alex 39:54
He’s coming back. He said he’s coming back.
Kevin 39:56
Well, the Steelers aren’t bringing him back. It is right to million dollar cap hit. So they’re either going to cut him and pay out the 22 million all up front that way, or have him restructure ahead of time like that. But his current cap, it just isn’t going to stay in place. We know that. So all things right the Steelers have a lot of different things. But they are most likely not bringing James Connor back. He’s a free agent as well. I think that they’re kind of over some of the injuries, everything else. And Chris Carson at times has an injury bug about him and not necessarily as consistent, but he’s a true aggressive runner. He’s a Thumper, he kind of fits that old school, steel curtain type play, if you will. Yeah, I think that’d be a very interesting fit. If that would all kind of come to be I think that’d be a good fit for Chris Carson, at least.
Derek 40:53
Yeah, no, you said that makes a lot of sense to me, too. I like that landing spot.
Kevin 40:58
Ryan Fitzpatrick to Denver. Oh,
Derek 41:00
yes. Please. Sign me up for that.
Alex 41:02
I mean, I’ll take it. But let’s have some fun and make Broncos football fun again. Damn it. What do you guys think about Juju? What are they? What are they gonna do with him in? in Pittsburgh? Do you think you think he comes back? Or do you think that who else is going to take that on?
Kevin 41:19
I think Juju is going to come back. And he’s going to take a hometown discount to do it. Like he’s, he hasn’t outright said he’s going to take less to stay. But he has come out and said that he very, very much so wants to return to Pittsburgh, a little bit of good PR, maybe it’s a little bit of backwards pressure towards the organization to make something happen. But they got to figure out what they’re doing Big Ben first, right. Yeah. Ben Roethlisberger has to decide. Is he going to? Does he want to continue his career in Pittsburgh? And if so what can they do to take his contract and relieve some of the pressure because right now they’re about $11.7 million over the cap, they got to find a way to massage that number down to not only get under the cap, but enough to bring on a running back. Unless they plan on drafting one which is possible, they could bring on like a Travis etn, I can see them drafting Travis etn, that’d be a decent home for him. Or if they’re going to bring a Juju back, like you got to free up some some space that way. And while he’s not going to demand, you know, 16 or $17 million a year, you’re gonna have to pay him 11 to 15 as it escalates, I’m guessing to get a Juju back. So there’s just a lot of things that these guys are going to have to do. As far as freeing up money, one way to spend it and another to keep some of these guys around, maybe they want or the player, whoever it is, is just gonna have to take a real sweetheart deal. And
Derek 42:52
yeah, I don’t know that Juju is gonna take that much of a hometown discount. I just I don’t see that one happening. But from a landing spot perspective, there’s not a ton of ton of other spots out there that just scream like, Juju is the guy here. You look at some potential places, Detroit could be one, they’ve they’re most likely going to need some receiver help there. But again, they’ve got salary cap issues that they’re up against. Yeah, another one that kind of stands out there would be you know, somebody like the Washington football team could use a another wide receiver to square up on the off side of Terry Maclaurin.
Kevin 43:33
Aren’t they the same guy though?
Derek 43:35
Yeah, no, like,
Kevin 43:37
those two specifically, like, are very much the same guy like you don’t have one who’s a big body possession receiver, but they’re both speedsters who stretch the field? Like? I’m sure it’d be fun in certain aspects. But you don’t have Patrick Mahomes at quarterback like the Kansas City Chiefs do. So you can’t keep a wide receiver room of three or four guys who all have the exact same skill set, you have to diversify somehow.
Alex 44:05
Right? here’s, here’s what I think, you know, Juju has got working against him. And we’re going to talk about it here in a little bit. But this rookie wide receiver class, this this class that’s coming out has a ton of potential upside to it. It’s a very deep class, right? I think we all agree that that this wide receiver class, again, it’s a very deep, wide receiver class. And their deals are going to be a lot more team friendly. You know, these rookie contracts will be a lot more team friendly than a guy like Juju Smith Schuster. So that’s just what I think he has working against him when it comes to, you know, oh, can we address an area of need? Well, would we take somebody with the miles on Am I Juju or do we go and look in the draft and see if we can find somebody that has a similar skill set might take a little bit for him to get up to speed so to speak, so to speak, but it’s It’s a little bit more friendly in terms of a cap deal. You know, if you’re a team that’s up against it like the lions, or you know, and you just have the opportunity to get a team friendly deal versus have that, you know, a minimum a league minimum for a veteran contract.
Kevin 45:15
Yeah, I think I think what the NFL is starting to see, and please, if you guys feel differently chime in, but wide receivers, not necessarily that they’re a dime a dozen, but wide receivers are becoming a much easier position to kind of fill in with outside of your top tier, right? Like, there’s a bunch of guys in that second and third tier, there’s still only a handful in tier one. And most of those guys are honestly a little bit older. Like you have these up and comers, right? You have these Calvin Ridley‘s, you have DJ Metcalf’s AJ Brown at times Turner Maclaurin at times. And then you have kind of this older guard, if you will, your Michael Thomas, your davante, Adams, your Julio Jones when healthy, your tyreke Hills, so but there’s a big gap between here and here still, and you have these younger guys coming up. They’re catching that middle group here pretty quick, because we had, this will be like the third consecutive year of really good wide receivers, hitting the NFL. And I think that’s going to continue to stay because these guys don’t want to be running backs anymore, like the NFL is not there, they’ve treated the running back position as a plug and play. And I think what that’s going to do further down the road is it’s going to turn the wide receiver position into something very similar. There’s going to be some differences. There, selflessness life’s a little bit longer, but don’t get banged up as much. You need more of them than just one or two running backs on your team. But it’s tons and tons and tons of wide receiver talent out right now. Like it is just crazy.
Alex 47:04
I think what what I see is the difference that obviously like you were saying, Kevin, there’s the superstars that are wide receivers, the guys that are game changers, but then the gap, you know, there’s the gap. And then there’s kind of those guys that are established, but serviceable and established aren’t that far apart anymore. You know, a serviceable wide receiver, there’s there’s a lot of them in the NFL and really if you have your game changer if you have a game changer on your team, to serviceable wide receivers on the other side of him are going to be okay, you know like it’s going to be enough to make sure that your game changer can still get free and make plays just to keep the defense’s eyes a little occupied. So I that’s what I that’s how I kind of view it is that there is an overabundance of serviceable wide receivers in the league. And every year that talent pool keeps getting more and more saturated with serviceable wide receivers who can, you know, eventually become game changers. But I mean, these guys that come in there ready to go right away, they can catch, right, they can catch and most of them have a pretty good concept of Route running. And that’s that’s kind of what you need to start yourself off in the NFL, especially now that you don’t really have to worry about run blocking all that much as a wideout anymore. because not a lot of corners are getting in there and trying to get involved in a run. So I just think that that’s, that’s how I see it. If that’s not kind of how you were explaining it as well. And I guess we differ a little bit, but that’s kind of what I see.
Derek 48:43
So let’s go ahead and we’ll move on over to the rookies. We’ve got like our top 15 guys coming your way from a rookie prospect side of things. And a lot of films still being watched in the good old boys, fantasy football, podcast, viewing rooms, as far as these rookies are concerned and a lot of that, but this is a early edition, kind of draft prospect rankings for you. So you know, going through it consensus number one for all of us, and it wasn’t even consensus. It was a unanimous number one overall prospect is going to be a guy named Trevor Lawrence. I don’t think there’s any surprise there. As far as the number two guy, there was a little bit of difference there between us because looking at it, both Kevin and Alex had Zach Wilson the quarterback out of BYU as their second prospect on the board. I had him at number eight. It’s one of those that I think he’s gonna have a I think he’s gonna have some learning curves there. And I think that there’s just some fields a guy a little bit more polished even in the quarterback room.
Alex 49:47
So I would like to quickly throw in why I’ve why I’ve gotten this way and this is the way that I think they get drafted. Versus the you know, they might have you know, different different outlooks. But this is the way that I think they get drafted nights. I see your point, Derek that Justin Fields might be a little bit more polished than Zach Wilson. But I think Zach Wilson is going to be one of those guys that NFL teams trip over themselves to try and get to and with the Jets picking second. That’s just what I I think that they would like to go with more of a quarterback like Zach Wilson, Ben, kind of the running quarterback that is Justin fields. So that’s how I’ve how I filled this out was how I think the top 15 teams will pick.
Derek 50:33
Very cool. So looking at it for our third picks. We were kind of all over the board. Nobody having the same two guys here. But, you know, Alex, you had in the heme Harris, or I’m sorry, you had Nagi Harris at three. I was looking at Caleb Farley as number three and Kevin had Devonta Smith as kind of that third prospect off the boards. What were your thoughts here?
Kevin 50:58
Thoughts? Were devonta Smith is gonna be the third guy off the board. No, dolphins right, the dolphins go to wide receiver. So this is in, I guess, the process of them not trading for deshaun Watson. So you got to go out and get options. What better way to go out and get an option for your quarterback your young quarterback is to get him and old teammates. Get him someone who already has a chemistry with a rapport with and bring them on in and let the two of them work together and try and kind of further develop that at the professional level. So Preston Williams has been dinged up with injuries. DeVante Parker, is he regressed? Right like he was more he was closer to what we all thought he was and what he showed in 2019. Last year injuries might have hampered that a little bit but whatever. So yes, I see them going wide receiver and kind of getting that young duo in together as far as the receiver quarterback.
Alex 52:00
I hear what you’re saying, Kevin and that makes a ton of sense. But this one to me just feels like to Miami. Miami is still trying to win the draft. And so you go flashy when you win the draft. And that’s why I went with Naji Harris. I think you know, I could easily see them going receiver here but I also could easily see them trading out of this spot. And not having this pick here. But as I see it with the dolphins picking. You know they were good. They were good at running back last year. Don’t get me wrong. But Naji Harris that that dude’s a tank, he’s a beast.
Kevin 52:41
See, and I have Aaron Jones going to Miami so I wouldn’t. Yeah, in that scenario, right.
Alex 52:47
Yeah. Yeah.
Derek 52:48
I I ended up going with Caleb Farley, I think he is a difference maker on the defensive side of the ball. The dolphins have a good defense. But I think that they’re gonna, again continue to build around that defensive side of the ball this coming year. And I see Caleb Farley’s being a difference maker at the position. I don’t think he’s gonna go third overall, but I think he’s probably talent wise up there. In the discussion with it. As far as number four goes, we got back on a unanimous decision here and that was Justin fields across the board. And he thoughts on Justin fields
Kevin 53:25
fitting is it that he’s going back to the state he left?
Alex 53:31
Going back to Georgia? Yeah, I think this is a good spot. I mean, obviously the Falcons have needs but they also have an aging quarterback that you know, Justin fields probably a year or two away from, from being what I think, you know, maybe like a Deshaun Watson light. But it’s gonna take time for him to develop because pro style games completely different than what they were really running up there at Ohio State. So that’s gonna take some time for him to develop and the Falcons got time to develop a young guy at quarterback because you still have Matt Ryan.
Derek 54:07
So see, well, the offensive lineman out of Oregon. You too had him at five. I had him at two, a lot of that narrative thing. I think that Sam Darnell will be back with the Jets next year and they’re gonna draft offensive lineman with that first pick. But what are your thoughts here, we’ll see Well,
Alex 54:23
the Bengals need to protect Joe Burrow. And that’s, I mean, this dude’s obviously a big body that can stand in there. So protect your investment in Joe Burrow.
Derek 54:35
Fair enough. I ended up having Jamal chase at number five. I think that they’re gonna pair up another wide receiver there against Tee Higgins. Imagine that combination running down the field. That offense would be electric.
Alex 54:48
That’d be great. Except for Joe Burrow would be on his backside before he could throw the ball to those two. So
Kevin 54:52
and I agree Joe Burrow took a bunch of sacks. Now, Ja’Marr Chase would be cool. I don’t know that they’re necessarily going to go Tyler Boyd Tee Higgins JaM’arr Chase like, it would be cool it’d be fun to watch for sure if Joe burrow had time to get them the ball. But at this point you take the best tackle in the draft and really it’s not even close this year like it’s a pretty big drop off and tackle. And if you’re sitting in the position where the Bengals are, and you can bolster your offensive line to protect your franchise, quarterbacks, you you take that and you just kind of pass on every other position for the moment and make it up later.
Derek 55:32
Yeah, for in my book. See well was already off the board though. So going with with us with the flashy pic. Looking at number six. Alex you had Ja’Marr Chase there I had Parsons there and Kevin you had Trey Lance any thoughts around these guys?
Alex 55:53
Oh you just want me to hate the Eagles even more. That was a straight up middle finger to Alex with that that’s that’d be something man if the Eagles the Eagles took another quarterback that would be that would be something I feel like they would give shoot I already forgot his name Jalen hertz a another weapon to throw to just because I think that teams in total rebuild mode I also don’t know that the Eagles stay at this spot you know that obviously there’s rumblings that they they could trade up and try and jump into that three spot which would be very interesting because why would you trade up because I still think that there’s plenty of talent that will be left on the board. Come number six, but I go with the Eagles taking a whiteout for Jalen Hurts to throw it to
Derek 56:43
ya know, that’d be a nice pickup there I went on the defensive side of the ball and picked up the linebacker I think they’re looking to rebuild they’re a little bit as as you already said, and yeah, getting a good young linebacker to to shore up that would help on that side of the ball.
Kevin 56:58
I think for the record. I think when I was doing it I thought I could see Carolina trying to jump up a couple spots to make sure that Denver doesn’t do anything and take their quarterback like I think that was kind of my train of thought at the moment so it’s not necessarily going to the Eagles Alex but it’s more of that pick that that spot in the draft.
Alex 57:20
Yeah. That’s funny.
Derek 57:24
Number seven. Alex, you had Parsons I had Kyle Pitts and Kevin, you had Ja’Marr chase any thoughts around these guys?
Kevin 57:31
This was a position where the lions are desperate. That’s just kind of how the board fell when I was looking at these things. At least to start with here. The for the first run of it is He is the best wide receiver on the board the mass exodus of wide receivers in Detroit like they have to stop the bleeding somewhere they have to give Jared Goff someone to throw the football to and why not do it with arguably the best wide receiver in the draft. He just didn’t play last year and I think his draft stock is going to take a slight dip because of that.
Alex 58:05
I went linebacker here with Parsons because it is the Detroit Lions and they will figure out a way to screw this thing up.
Derek 58:17
Alrighty, moving on over to number eight. Alex, you had Kyle Pitts there. I had Zach Wilson there. And Kevin, you had
Kevin 58:29
Azeez Ojulari out of Georgia plays outside linebacker for the Georgia Bulldogs. Are did now he’s going to play outside linebacker for the Carolina Panthers. position in need at this point. There’s a lot of different things Carolina could do if they’re staying there. Again, I don’t think Carolina staying there I think they’re flipping with Philadelphia so technically I have Philadelphia taking an outside linebacker to help bolster that defense but all things the same arguably the best linebacker in the class had a really really good season this past year Georgia shined very well especially down the stretch and into the bowl game so for me the obvious choice there at eight
Alex 59:18
Yeah, so I went Pitts here to Carolina obviously again I think tight end is kind of a spot of need when we broke them down last week you know it was do we want to talk about their tight ends and it was really no we don’t want to talk about there’s no tight ends to talk about there so you get a guy like
Kevin 59:39
Thomas How dare you you get don’t miss shows. You guys just blow past these guys like this is why I don’t miss shows.
Alex 59:50
But to me, Kyle Pitts you know he’s he is a pretty sure handed pass catcher, and one of the regulars sites that I looked at for him you know, in my my research you know, I was pro football focus was the ranking research and he registered really well and pro football focus stats. So I don’t know that he you know, obviously tight ends such a fickle position but I think that they could they could use some tight and help they’re in Carolina.
Derek 1:00:22
There’s a lot of teams out there right now too that are reports coming out saying that they’re viewing Kyle Pitts is the second or third overall receiver coming out this year for more than a tight end. So he just certainly has a unique skill set in a big body. So it’ll be interesting to see how that comes to play. Number nine, we were differing opinions there as well. Alex, you had Caleb Farley, I had Vera, Vera Tucker. And Kevin, you had Parsons, what are your thoughts here?
Kevin 1:00:55
I’m going back to the well that I’ve been pounding on for the Denver Broncos for the past three seasons and you need a middle linebacker, like a true middle linebacker. Josie jewel is not the answer. Todd Davis was not the answer. Like you need a true middle linebacker they passed on it with Devin Bush, because for whatever reason, he didn’t fit the Fangio model and they went out and got no fat instead you know, whatever the rest is history but you got to have someone who can stop the bleeding in the middle of the field the Broncos currently don’t have that. And Michael Parsons steps in and as a starter from day one,
Alex 1:01:41
I am with you there but I also think that the Broncos have a severe need at the cornerback position. And with the the departure of boy a and who knows what’s going to happen with Justin sim is that defensive backfield is going to be atrocious at best. So that’s why I went with Farley.
Derek 1:02:06
I think they’re going to continue to try and get that offensive lined up and they’re going to go with the offensive line piece there to try and shore that up even a little bit more so and really, if Drew Lock is going to be there guy going to give him yet another set of weapons to try and try and help him out. Both keep him upright and get the ball down the field. Looking at it number 10 Alex, you had Waddle, Jaylen Waddle at 10
Alex 1:02:38
I’m gonna amend this I’m gonna go because apparently I forgot you know devonta Smith exists. So I’m gonna go demonte Smith.
Kevin 1:02:47
Hold on. So you have davante Smith. It’s about fell out of my chair.
Alex 1:02:52
I forgot he existed.
Kevin 1:02:53
You have the Cowboys taking another wide receiver?
Alex 1:02:56
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, I do. I do
Derek 1:03:01
is Michael Gallup back though. Isn’t he a free agent?
Alex 1:03:04
Yes. I don’t believe
Derek 1:03:06
but he’s in a scenario. I don’t see them going.
Kevin 1:03:09
Is that really all that far fetched? They took frickin wide receiver last year because CeeDee because CeeDee Lanb is there.
Alex 1:03:17
DaVonta Smith, the Heisman winner, if he’s still on the board, you’re gonna tell me Jerry Jones isn’t taking that
Kevin 1:03:23
on until you see the lands better than DeVonta Smith. I wouldn’t I don’t give too many compliments to Oklahoma folk. So take that for what it’s worth.
Alex 1:03:32
I think I think if he’s there I think Jerry Jones has no choice. Now. I don’t know. Either.
Kevin 1:03:40
Right.
Alex 1:03:41
I don’t know that he’s gonna be that
Kevin 1:03:42
but I’m gonna go to the second piece real quick. I this is the this is the need for the Cowboys, right? So this is where we differ a little bit. The Cowboys need help in the secondary much like the Denver Broncos do. pairing up Patrick Surtain Jr. with Diggs, read again, reunites teammates natural chemistry on the backside of the defense in between Diggs in certain when they were in Alabama together. It instantly fills a hole again, another step in from day one starter like he is ready to go now. He is a leader on the field. He understands how to play the free safety position and you set him back you get him up to speed and then you just go he’s gonna get picked on a little bit as all young secondary players do. But he is so stinking smart. Kind of being the the catalyst and the captain of that nip Nick Saban defense here for the last couple years that he is he is absolutely out of the package NFL ready,

guys, I like it that’s gonna wrap up the kind of our top 10 prospects there. For draft season. We’ll be hitting this up and shows the calm so stay tuned on that one. Guys, I do believe that that’s gonna take us to the end of this session. Episode, any final thoughts for the listeners on this one,
Kevin 1:05:02
stay classy, do your draft research, do something fun for the draft, like, as you’re looking at all this, like, get some buddies together, throw a couple bucks in on it and just come up with a little blanket pool of, you know, the the team, like the pick the team and the player, right. And the number of total points that you get comes to the winner and the winner gets the pot like this should be fun, throw a little bit of money in on it. God knows we don’t have daily fantasy football. So you might as well draft you know, bet on the draft and have some fun with that.

As as we approach the the one year anniversary of the day that sports kind of shut down or the days that sports shut down, don’t necessarily take for granted. All of this fun stuff that we’re getting to talk about right now. Because while the NFL was a machine, and thank goodness, they were a machine and just kept on truckin with whatever they were doing. This is obviously a lot of fun to talk about. And it’s fun to look forward to this stuff. But I guess what I’m trying to say is, yeah, make it fun, because oh boy, we’ve seen how quickly all of this can can go away. And even what the you know, hopefully there’s a tournament that we can distract ourselves with a men’s basketball tournament to distract ourselves with this year and you know, all these other things, but yeah, my goodness,
Kevin 1:06:28
only Alex is going to be able to name teams 30 through 64 pi, probably
Alex 1:06:33
not. I have there’s so many question marks surrounding I mean, shoot, we could see a tournament where there’s no Duke and no North Carolina in it this year.
Kevin 1:06:42
And no Kansas and no Kentucky
Alex 1:06:44
like oh, I mean, I think Kansas is pretty well clawed their way back in. But yeah, this is gonna be a wide open tournament. So that’ll be a ton of fun. You know, I I love the chaos that is March Madness. I embrace all of it. Even you know, even when it hurts me to my core, I will still never forgive Virginia. For the one year that I picked them to win it all they were the first number one seed to lose it all. Granted, they did bounce back the next year and did win at all but I was so gun shy from them that I vowed to never pick Virginia again. But yeah, that that’s the chaos that we can all embrace. And, and hopefully it’s fun, fun chaos this year. If you’re if you’re Michigan or Gonzaga, are you almost crossing Kansas a
Kevin 1:07:31
little bit because you know, they’re gonna get stuck in that eight nine. Yeah, and that’s the number one, you’re gonna have to play Kansas.
Alex 1:07:39
There are going to be especially because there isn’t a ton of in the hopes of not hijacking this into a college basketball podcast, but there with with the lack of preseason, if you will, the non conference with the lack of that this year. It’s just going to be absolute chaos. And we’re really going to see how strong some of these conferences actually are based on what these teams that come out. And how many teams get in that get in but the selection committee has got their work cut out for them this year. It’s
Kevin 1:08:09
a season with football right now. I mean, every season everybody’s stuck into it. And so here we’re just gonna put these guys
Alex 1:08:17
Hey, it looks good. And hopefully all the all the games get played. We don’t have you know, 30 bowl games canceled 30 tournament games canceled. But that just I know it’s been a year and it has been a long one for a lot of people. But, you know, just hopefully you don’t take this for granted because we have seen how it how it can be taken away. I’ll get off my soapbox now.
