Alrighty, welcome in, ladies and gentlemen to another episode of the good old boys fantasy football Podcast. I am Derek and I am joined by your co host, Alex, Kevin, unfortunately not gonna be able to make it with us tonight. However, we do have a very special guest coming atcha and that’s Chris. He is at @DetroitBeastie on the Twitter. Let’s go ahead and move on over in to the Panthers Carolina Panthers are the team of the week to break down. They’ve got some very interesting fantasy options and pieces and we’re going to focus heavily on the offensive side of the ball. We’re gonna start where we always do and that’s the running back room. We’re gonna start over there with Christian McCaffrey, who ended up finishing, you know, running back 53 on the year last year, 59 rushes 224 yards, five rushing touchdowns, 17 receptions, 19 targets for an additional 149 through the air and one touchdown on a very injury shortened season. But guys, what are your thoughts here around Christian McCaffrey?

Christian McCaffrey 2021 Fantasy Football

Alex 01:14
I don’t think this is a case where you need to be scorned by last year’s performance. And I mean that in that you know, there are times where you draft a guy number one number two overall, and he just doesn’t perform the way that number one or number two overall and your redraft should perform. that I don’t think is the case. While I do am a little still leery of what’s going on there and Carolina and how much CMC gets played into is what to Matt Rhule sees as CMCs role? I still think that CMC is you would be very justified in taking him pending on what you see from his his recovery and whatnot. And unfortunately, if you’re in a redraft league hopefully that’s after some mini camps have happened and the start of training camp, and you would be just fine. Going back to that well at number one. Number two, to take CMC I’m a little leery because I don’t I don’t know what the you know, who’s going to be a quarterback if it’s still Teddy, if it’s somebody else. We’ll get to that in a second. But I still think that CMC is one of the top when healthy, one of the top five players in the NFL, and I would have a hard time putting him at five. So that’s that’s where I see CMC in terms of what you’re going to get out of him take last year for what it was it was an injury shortened season. And it’s unfortunate that he didn’t come through for a lot of people that had him you know, that took him number one or number two. And you know, it’s the same same with with Saquon, just just take last season out of it. He’s still one of the best football players in the league, and can score in so many different ways in terms of fantasy purposes. So I like Christian McCaffrey if he’s available, and I’ve got the one 1:01 or the 1:02 and he’s available at one of the to post draft move on

Chris Robin 03:15
there I find it and I’m sure you guys we’ll agree here there are a lot of buzzwords that are always going on in the fantasy football community truth or sleeper if everybody’s asleep or that nobody’s asleep or that’s how I think of it but injury prone is another word that people always throw out. Guy misses you know a handful of games or three games in one season. He’s injury prone we saw Matt Stafford missed all last year with a broken back and then up he was injury prone having played every game for like nine or 10 years. So people throw that word around too loosely and people are calling Christian McCaffrey injury prone and I think that is unbelievably ignorant to even do he had some hard lock things didn’t break his way last season, but that’s okay. He’s a young kid he keeps his body in in pristine condition. I’m not worried about drafting Christian McCaffrey first overall at all. He’s my preferred number one overall draft selection. So I guess I’m trying to say that as a PSA, listen who you are, excuse me pay attention to who you listen to or or read in even chat with. If people are calling Christian McCaffrey a Boston you have to say 75 to probably 85% of the NFL is injury prone. It’s just what happens. It’s a physical these guys are bigger and stronger than they’ve ever been before. And Christian McCaffrey is going to be okay, I know that that’s kind of my my de facto answer when someone says what do you think about this player? Every guy they’re always going to be okay. This is what they do for a living. They take every ounce of their energy and effort to being healthy and playing football. So again, I have no issue no qualms with Christian McCaffrey being number one overall.

Derek 04:57
Yeah, I’m right there with you. And in fact, you Yes. My my sneaky question that I was going to ask here is, you know, who are you taking with the 101 this coming year? For me it is Christian McCaffrey that’s where I’m looking at as well right like when you start diving into some of the statistics and looking at that, while he only played three games in those three games, he was electric and dynamic, right like looking at just a half point PPR scoring he he scored five points more per game on the games on those games that he played. Then Alvin Kamara did who finished as running back number one overall for fantasy and a half point PPR scoring when you look at it to there’s few running backs out there that are going to be able to command 100 receptions coming out of the backfield and also carry the ball 200 to 300 to 250 to 300 times rushing the ball there as well and have the ability to make a guy Miss and take it to the house. Chris McCaffrey truly isn’t a special player in elite caliber player and prior to this last season, where he got banged up and dinged up a little bit really hadn’t missed any time so I’m right there with you that the injury doesn’t scare me off on this one. It’s not one that I’m going to be looking at really any other direction if I’m sitting on the board, one on one in a redraft league You know, that’s a smash the button Yes. and move on.

Alex 06:16
I mean, the guy had six touchdowns in three games, how do you stray away from that? I mean, honestly, and and, and I think that that’s something that you you are going to have to consider I again, I would like to see some reports coming out of Carolina through a mini camp through at least the first part of training camp to see kind of his progression coming back from it but he missed so much time last year and while they had I think the option to bring him back in week 17 they were smart and they realized we got really nothing to play for Let’s protect our asset and you know, turn the page towards 2021 and try and hope for you know, better days ahead so I’ll give kudos to Carolina for for forward thinking when it comes to that but yeah, I I like Christian McCaffrey a lot and I hope that if you are in a league with somebody who says that he’s injury prone, let him talk to everybody else in the league. But don’t be fooled by what he’s saying. Because he might be trying to justify the fact that he wants Christian McCaffrey whatever dress like he’s in. But if you’re at the one on one, smash draft, move on.

Derek 07:23
Yeah, go ahead and drive down the price for me.

Chris Robin 07:25
Derek, I want to revisit and answer your question about one on one. The wheels were turning as you guys were speaking here in depending on the format, like in a redraft. I could highly consider Derrick Henry number one overall for me, but I love the way the guy runs and there’s no he’s he’s massive, and there’s no signs of him slowing down. So in a redraft League, Derrick Henry, if it was a dynasty, I could even argue Jonathan Taylor or DeAndre Swift So again, it’s all personal preference here and also, you know, what format you’re playing plays a huge role as well.

Derek 08:01
Yeah, if I’m playing in a format that has its redraft, obviously and if it has any sort of receptions play a role in it, CMC you’re you’re hard pressed to find a running back that’s going to get the same volume as a workhorse back in the league and there’s very few of them with the kind of receiving upside that he’s got. So for me it’s it’s smash the button and move on.

Chris Robin 08:22
And I know this is going to be silly of me to even say with super flex being all the rage, but in your your bottom of the fantasy football thing, just a standard scoring kind of League. Derrick Henry is my seriously is my first number one overall pick, no points per reception just targets or excuse me touches in yardage. Derrick Henry, if nobody knows, knew he put over 2000 rushing yards together last season, so a case could be made for a few guys, but literally only four or five of them. So just that literal literal handful of selections at 101.

Alex 08:56
I don’t know about Derrick Henry season last year rode that horse to a championship

Derek 09:01
Good for you. First one you want. I am very proud of you, Alex.

Chris Robin 09:05
I feel like Alex beat you Derek in the championship game the way No, no, no, not your response. You’re

Alex 09:10
still a first round just since

Derek 09:12
he was the as the number one I was the one seed and Derrick Henry exploded on on that one. And and I ended up losing that one.

Chris Robin 09:20
Was that the 279 yard rushing game? I think he had

Derek 09:24
Yeah, that was it was a big one.

Chris Robin 09:26
Yeah, I wrote that Derrick Henry horse all the way to the championship. That was you Alex and then dirty. Yep. Proud of you very proud of you.

Derek 09:35
Yeah, absolutely. Right.

Alex 09:36
A bit of a sore subject for that number one seed. Yep. Yep, it is. You’ve

Derek 09:40
been my kryptonite in that league for as long as I can remember. Let’s go ahead and talk about Mike Davis, though. He is also in the running back room in Carolina. And kind of curious to see because he obviously had a lot of fantasy value this past year. With the absence of Christian McCaffrey. He finishes running back 15 last year 100 65 carries 642 yards on the ground six rushing touchdowns. 59 receptions on 70 targets with 373 yards to the air and two receiving touchdowns. What are your thoughts on Mike Davis?

Mike Davis 2021 Fantasy Football

Chris Robin 10:13
I’m good. If I may, if I may go ahead. I’ll say this. It’ll be short and sweet Alex, I promise you here. If I have Mike Davis on a team, I’m selling him for anything and everything right now. His value will never be higher, and you’re still getting that kind of last year. You know, vibe or that last year kind of hangover from him. When he did what he did. I fully expect Christian McCaffrey to be a well oiled machine this season, relegating Mike Davis to nothingness. So use him now to alleviate or to get like a draft selection. A second third round pick which would be very second round pick would be very high. But depending on the format again, sell him now. You should have already sold him months ago. You should have sold him in the regular season after he scored several times and in put up 100 yard game. So if you still have Mike Davis on your team expecting him to be your white knight in shining armor, you’re sorely mistaken.

Alex 11:09
Yeah, that’s that’s exactly what I was going to say. I mean, he’s he just turned 28 which in running back outside of Frank Gore is basically Yeah, I mean, he’s, he’s, he’s run his course so to speak in the NFL at 28 years old and and really that’s that’s his role in Carolina when McCaffrey is healthy is to just spell McCaffrey right like that’s what his role is going to be. And it’s not going to have you know, kind of that running back one and running back one a field no it McCaffrey is a is one of the true workhorse backs, you know, three down backs that that still left in the league. And so Mike Davis, his role is literally to just spell Christian McCaffrey after he rips off a 59 yarder that didn’t get in the end zone. And McCaffrey needs a breather on on the sideline. So I don’t think that that Davis honestly has any fantasy relevance, except for in very deep leagues, where you know, you need to just fill out roster spots, but in a dynasty situation, if you haven’t sold them yet, sorry, you’re stuck with that anchor, that you’re probably just going to end up cutting, I see no fantasy relevance. And it’ll be interesting to see what Carolina does in the draft here. If they go grab, you know, one of those young running backs that’s out there to maybe have kind of a one two punch with McCaffrey, maybe, maybe save him a little bit, and really use him smart. smartly, smartly. That’s a word right. But to use him a little bit more efficiently, I guess I should say. And have you know, have yourself another young back that can do it. But would Mike Davis at 28 just turned 28 Happy birthday to you, Mike, thank you for your contributions, but not in 2021?

Derek 12:58
Yeah, I don’t see them necessarily spending any real draft capital on a rookie running back coming into this draft. So you’re gonna see a CMC you know, early often and all the time type of thing down there and Carolina, kind of going back to why I’m looking at him one on one and any redraft format that I’m in. As far as Mike Davis goes, he’s a guy that I’m gonna leave on the waiver wire if something should happen, maybe you know, put, spend the fab budget there and it really go at it. But other than that, I’m not going anywhere near that one because I don’t think he will have any fantasy relevance outside of, you know, another injury this coming year. Let’s go ahead and move on over to the wide receiver room. And they’ve got some interesting options here. DJ Moore finished as wide receiver 22 last year, 66 receptions on 118 targets 1193 yards for receiving touchdowns. He even put up a little bit of work on the ground with two rushes for 22 yards. Guys, what are your thoughts on DJ Moore?

DJ Moore 2021 Fantasy Football

Alex 13:59
So I know that that the hosts of this podcast were very high on DJ Moore last year and and rightfully so there was a lot of expectation being placed on him and this was even before the CMC injury that probably put a little bit more expectation on the pass game. But when you do have a running back as valuable and as good as Christian McCaffrey, those safeties are gonna cheat up a little bit. It’s going to open up the passing game a little bit, whether or not you have a quarterback that can take advantage of that is a completely different discussion. But with DJ Moore, I think, wherever you drafted him last year, which was right around, what would you say Derek, in that that fourth, fifth round.

Derek 14:45
It really depended upon where you were looking at him. Typically you reach athletes, you were starting third round, fourth round type of value for him. dynasty was going yeah, I’ve seen him in some dynasty leagues going into last year as early as a second round. Just because he’s so young but traditionally kind of a third round pick for most cases last year,

Alex 15:05
so I know that I know that there was a lot more you know, obviously the Panthers team changed completely when CMC got hurt, but there is still plenty of value with DJ Moore so if he’s still available, you know in that third round, he finished in that wide receiver 22 range and boy, I would have to think that that would go up maybe just slightly. I mean, obviously when you have a CMC on your on your offense at the passing works, not going to be all that great but he’s got the ability to be right in that 22 range again, if not a little bit higher, towards the good at 2120. You know, but DJ Moore is a very good valuable player for you and I what he did this last year, I could totally see him replicating in 21

Chris Robin 15:51
I out of nowhere, I’ve become a DJ Moore fan of DJ truth or as I said it’s an awful buzzword but it fits the bill here so quick story about my that IDP dynasty league I’m in I have DJ Moore on my team now after I was sent an offer for Tee Higgins and and a two round to pick two. So two, two, and Tee Higgins for DJ Moore and I accepted it as fast as I could, because I like the age of DJ Moore and what he’s expected to do this season. And again, it was kind of based on if hoping actually the Teddy Bridgewater is not their quarterback next season. I think Teddy Bridgewater is just he’s not as physically you know, viable as some other quarterbacks like if you put DJ Moore on, you know, the Washington or no excuse me like Seattle with Russ there he would be fantastic. I think DJ Moore will be will be great. And so I love the idea of me trading for him. I didn’t even ask for it. It was sent to me in my inbox and again, I can be honest with you guys. He was one of those guys that I nothing kind of like Carson Wentz. There’s a few people like that in the league and I just nothing DJ Moore. He was you know, being compared to AJ Brown when they came out of college and in their first few seasons in the in the pros and he has not you know, compared to AJ Brown, obviously AJ B is the superior talent here. But there is a lot of room for DJ Moore to grow and blossom on our fantasy roster rosters. And again, I accepted that trade because in this league, you know, in any fantasy league, if it’s dynasty or long running here, you can’t, you know, rest on your laurels and just say what I did last season is going to carry over. You don’t have to turn your roster over 100% every time but you have to make some little tweaks. And I just love the idea. I keep saying I love this. I love that. But I absolutely very much enjoy that I was able to get a second early second round selection this year. It was just too good to be true for me. And I love Tee Higgins but again, the offer was too sweet and I know DJ Moore again as I told you guys earlier in the broadcast, everybody’s going to be fine. That’s my mo that’s my mantra. DJ Moore is going to rise up draft boards The more we see this season and otas and hopefully we get some some preseason games and I’m calling it now hopefully we can remember this or we listen to it back with DJ Moore is going to be one of the hotter buys at wide receiver early on by week five, week six. Week Six social media is going to be going nuts for DJ Moore you have to add him now you’re going to miss your window. It’s another buzzword DJ Moore is going to be outstanding this season.

Derek 18:35
I absolutely will subscribe to that method. methodology there love that opinion in that take. I’m very much in the same boat with you. I I ended up keeping DJ Moore in our home league this past year, because I knew that there wasn’t a chance that I was going to I was going to get him on the the turn in really what was going to be that second round there. Because I had a guy named Kevin pick him behind me in that one but was a guy that I had slated to have a top five finish as far as wide receivers going into 2020. I don’t know that he’s necessarily going to get there this year. But I absolutely see him being a wide receiver one in 2021 DJ Moore has what we call a Teddy Bridgewater problem, right? He’s got a quarterback that just doesn’t quite know how to utilize him. And you saw that very prevalent throughout the season. Right? Like he had a couple of games that he absolutely splashed and flashed in. And it wasn’t even games that he necessarily had a ton of targets in. It was a deal that Teddy Bridgewater would hit him on kind of a quick hitch and he was gone to the house. And you saw a couple of those things where he had you know, 75 yard touchdown reception on what was a short route because he’s got that ability to make a guy Miss get up the field and just run away from people. So from a talent perspective, absolutely love the talent of TJ Moore. If we can get him away from a Teddy Bridgewater, which I think the Panthers are going to do. They’ve got a very early Pick this year sounds like they’re very active in the market right now trying to acquire some of these some of these other quarterbacks out there so I could very much see them getting another quarterback and if that happens I think you’re right Chris you’re gonna see DJ Moore‘s name fly up the draft board and they must go get bored because last year he was only the wide receiver 14 taken with an ADP of 34 so that put them right there in the third round. And you’re going into it with a new quarterback. I don’t know that I’m going to name probably more than maybe about seven receivers that I would want over DJ Moore heading into 2021

Alex 20:37
I’m still kind of thrown by your by your your trade that you made there, Chris.

Derek 20:44
tries a heck of a deal T. Yes,

Alex 20:47
I think so. But man Tee Higgins with Joe Burrow was something else. And I think that that his numbers probably got a little stunted after you know, I probably they definitely did get stunted after the Burro injury. But yeah, I think in terms of proven, proven commodities and what DJ Moore did with Teddy Bridgewater and DJ Moore, Joe Burrow type. That’s probably a very, very, very valuable play there. So yeah, I just we just need to see what the Panthers do at quarterback. But even with a Teddy Bridgewater type DJ Moore prove that he would be valuable. Prove that he is is a good receiver in this league. And so if they can upgrade at the quarterback position, which I think we’re all on board with the fact that they’re they’re going to or at least address it in the next two or three years. DJ Moore remains somebody that you you’re going to want to have it on your roster.

Chris Robin 21:42
I didn’t mention this because it I guess I should have it’s very important but the team that I sold Tee Higgins two is very much a panic seller. So after Tee Higgins has a bad like two game stretch here I should be able without doubt you know be able to get him back and I knew that going ahead of things you know if i if i if it was an offer from a team who does who rarely trade they’re ironclad and all that they do, I probably would have held off on it but I know that the guy that I traded with panics and he sells all the time he panics and cuts guys he is a real wild man here. So again, I’m I firmly believe if need be I could you know grab Tee Higgins and get him back here again. It was the second round, early early second round selection that kind of tipped the scales for me.

Robby Anderson 2021 Fantasy Football

Derek 22:29
Let’s go ahead and look at Robby Anderson who finished wide receiver 24 last year 95 receptions 136 targets 1097 yards three receiving touchdowns. Guys your thoughts on Robby Anderson.

Alex 22:44
Once again this is a case of who’s throwing the football there and Carolina but again Robby Anderson prove that he can be 1000 yard receiver in this league with Teddy Bridgewater throwing and again, as I’ve gone back to each time this offense was completely different when CMC wasn’t on the field. It’s going to be different when CMC comes back on the field but Robby Anderson is another guy that if you get him in if he’s still available and you’re redraft league in that you know third or fourth round you know I don’t think I’d have any issue with you know if I’ve already gotten my running back situation figured out I’m okay with taking a Robby Anderson there third fourth round sure he’s not not a DJ Moore but I think that there’s still plenty of upside there for Robby Anderson

Chris Robin 23:31
here follow me here what I’m about to say it’s it’s no secret anymore. Robby came from the Jets didn’t really do much he was like he was a one trick pony kind of a like a flyer especially in DFS formats like in a big tournament he was a punt play in essence meaning you just you know punt something up and see where it goes. But come to find out and this is the part that is not like earth shattering or news to anybody when he went to Carolina Robby started running more routes instead of being that one trick pony boom right down the field little to no separation and just go go chase the ball and hope that you catch it Robby Anderson started to run more intermediate kind of routes slant passes over the middle stopping goes all those those very elementary kind of routes and look what happened so it to me Robby Anderson was plucked out of obscurity in New York and thrust into a position with Carolina and he made good on the money that they paid him any made good in his own personal beliefs that hey, I’m not a one trick pony. And again, I I’d like to think it was all had to do with coaching the coach has said Why do you all Why do you just run 60 yards on every play? Let’s stop let’s go over some routes and go from there and boom lo and behold, Robby Anderson was a fantastic you know, wide receiver to in on some weeks but mainly a wide receiver three on our fantasy teams which are very important. If you want to have Any success in a seasonal format?

Derek 25:03
Yeah, absolutely. He was a guy that drastically outperformed his ADP when you look at it, he was the 56, wide receiver taken off the board, which again, that was one of those that to your point, Chris, you’re talking about a lot of people were taking him as a Hey, let’s, he’s a guy worth having his he’ll have a blow up week here and there, and maybe I can pick that right week. But you know, a guy that was taken as the 118, pick off the boards, you’re talking about ninth 10th round type of talent there. And so I don’t know that he’s gonna necessarily push all the way up to where you’re thinking there, Alex it like a fourth or fifth round? I’m thinking probably more. Yeah,

Alex 25:38
I mean, yeah, that’s what I was missing. I misspoke there. When I said, third, fourth round, I’ve completely missed that one. But yeah, in that, you know, fifth, sixth, seventh area, that’s when you’re gonna want it.

Derek 25:51
Now, don’t get me wrong, there’ll be some people that will overpay and overreach for him a little bit, because they see where he finished last year. And this again, goes back to your do your research and make sure that you know what you’re getting when you look at that improvement, a quarterback should even improve that. But this is another guy that you managed to escape the atom gaisce cyclone, and got better, right, we’ve seen this happen and this narrative play out time and time again, from a lot of these, these players. And this kind of fits that bill and fits that mold that your first year away from Adam, Jason, and you see a lot better production out of that. And I think that speaks right back to the point that you were making Chris that you you gotta you got a coach, that’s just sending them down the down the field on nine routes. And now you’ve got a guy that’s able to come inside, you know, run some shorter and intermediate routes. And because I remember, I don’t remember who you’re talking to. But in this show before the season started, when we broke down the Panthers last year, it was very much you know, how in the world is Robby Anderson gonna fit into this this offense because he’s a guy that you can’t catch the ball shorter than about 18 to 20 yards off the field, and Teddy Bridgewater can’t throw the ball more than 15 yards down the field. And lo and behold, we figured that one out, and we’ve seen how they’re going to use him. And he’s got a lot of value in there. And he’s a guy that I would be looking to put on my team as the third wide receiver, fourth wide receiver type of deal. So he’s a guy don’t reach on, but if you can get him kind of that six seventh round, I think you’re gonna get a ton of value for him.

Chris Robin 27:18
I’m gonna say this to both you and anybody that’s going to watch this or listen to this here. There’s going to be a handful of guys that are taken way too early by people that are jumping the gun that they look at what happened last season. And again, it’s that effect of lat last year, but fantasy football is kind of what have you done for me lately, but my my original point was somebody’s going to overvalue Robby Anderson, someone’s going to overvalue Juju and in turn, a very good player is going to drop to you so if we can kind of think of like get a good draft plan going, we’re gonna wind up with with some Heck, or excuse me one heck of a team given the fact that a guy like Robby Anderson is going to be taken very early, way too early and we are going to reap the benefits. So I pay a large stock into you know, preparing and writing notes down so Robby Anderson is on my list of guys to watch for and see where he goes and how I benefited from someone buying him too early.

Curtis Samuel 2021 Fantasy Football

Derek 28:22
I love it. Guys, Curtis Samuel is still a panther but he’s slated to become a free agent this year. I don’t know that we’re gonna see him back with the Panthers just due to some salary cap issues and all of that but let’s go ahead and take a quick look at Curtis Samuel who finished wide receiver 25 last year 77 receptions 97 targets 851 yards, three touchdowns through the air. He also ran quite a bit 41 rushes for 200 yards on the ground and two rushing touchdowns. Guys, what are your thoughts on Curtis? Samuel?

Chris Robin 28:54
Well aside, I’ll be honest and open with you guys again, aside from Corey Davis. I’m very much hoping that the lions can land Curtis Samuel it would be fantastic. And when you look what happened last year, this coaching staff kind of unlocked his potential and what was it it was a do everything in anything kind of guy. He’s better when he works in that Swiss Army role kind of thing here. He can get the ball directly snapped to him, he can run the ball, he can do all kinds of stuff. And I love what I saw from him. So for him to leave Carolina and go somewhere else. You have to think that whatever team he goes to the head coach has already scouted this. And he knows what to expect from Curtis Samuel, play to his strengths. Let him do this let him do that kind of like Robby Anderson. They said you know let’s let’s throw out everything you did in your career before you got here and let’s try something new. I’d like to think that that’s what they did with Curtis Samuel and look what it what what happened because of that. So again, I love Curtis Samuel to be here in Detroit, whatever team he goes to, even if it’s back with the Panthers, he’s going to have a nice hunk of success to kind of build off of here.

Alex 30:06
And that not that nice hunk of success, though may not translate very well to your fantasy team in Curtis Samuel again, it seems like with the Panthers, and I think again, this is a product of Teddy. They just had, they had good wide receivers, right. Like they had good wide receivers and there was nothing great about you know, DJ Moore was was good, right? He wasn’t great. He wasn’t exceptional, but he was he was good. Robby Anderson. Good. You know, Curtis Samuel for what he you know what he provided? That was good. And I just don’t know, it all depends on his landing spot in terms of where I’m going to target and if I’m going to target him. I think I booked probably some other directions. I mean, you’re talking about a wide receiver. Three, four territory. There’s so many guys that you know, you might be able to get a better better value out of maybe a rookie might be better than that. I mean, it’s all gonna last year I’m sure that you might get a flash in the pan like a Justin Jefferson who you don’t see coming out of out of anywhere really. But you can get that rookie that would be better. Yeah, as far as it comes for for Curtis Samuel I’m it’s a wait and see approach if he falls to me at a good spot. And I’m looking to kind of add some wide receiver depth that gives me an option in terms of wide receiver three wide receiver for territory, then that’s where where I’m going to go, I’ll probably entertain that idea. But in terms of roster construct, I’ve just ever there’s too many wildcards for me right now, to get a good estimation of what Curtis Samuel was.

Derek 31:53
I I actually really liked the take you had with courtesy mail to Detroit, actually love that landing spot for him. Because we’ve seen a similar matchup with our similar pair up with your golf in a Robert Woods, right you look at kind of what they do on the field, you’ll see a lot of things kind of shake out there between Curtis Samuel and old Robert Woods there as far as you know, how they, their their two guys that they will utilize and get them the ball and make sure that they’re getting involved in the play, whether it’s, you know, quick tap passes or behind the behind the backfield handoffs and get them out there in space and let them work. Really, really liked that landing spot, I think it could be something really special kind of play out there. And Lord knows that the Detroit Lions are going to need a lot of help at wide receiver. Considering the majority that wide receiver room is a free agent, like we talked about last week. But Curtis Samuel was a guy that once they started figuring out how to use him, because all the way up until Week Six, they It was very apparent that they didn’t know how to get him involved. But once you started seeing him get involved in about week seven all the way to the end, he was very, very good for your fantasy construct and fantasy roster. And he’s a guy that I think a lot of people may actually overlook a little bit when you’re starting to talk about fantasy next year. And as guy that I’m probably going to be seeing I if I have to give him a round grade without knowing his landing spot right now, I’m going to say probably about round eight, maybe round nine. And there’s tremendous value for a guy in round eight round nine that has the upside of what Curtis Samuel can do because he’s a guy that could easily break into the top 24. Again, I think more realistically, you’re going to probably see him finish around wide receiver 30 this next year, but ton of upside. And I think you’re going to be able to get a lot of value when it comes to the draft time.

Chris Robin 33:45
Get this What would you think of a DeAndre Swift kind of Curtis Samuel backfield in a way where you can line them both up in the backfield and again you don’t know who’s going to get the football on any given play Anthony Lin is now that lions you know offensive coordinator we saw what he did for Austin eckler I’m fully expecting the same results for DeAndre Swift. And then you put Curtis Samuel in the mix. You’re going to I don’t want to say fool defense because they’re very smart nowadays, but you’re going to cause some sort of riff a little bit of panic may be played a play where who’s going to get the ball and where are they going to go? Worse worse, excuse me worst case scenario, it frees up the middle of the field or the outside of the field. If they were to bring back Kenny G or if they were to bring in Corey Davis here so there’s nothing but but but a good move to be made here. or excuse me, nothing but good results to happen here. If Curtis Samuel does land in Detroit,

Alex 34:42
the phrase you’re after there, Chris is stressors. That’s what defenses hate. They hate stressors. They hate the stressors and anytime you have great playmakers on the field that’s going to stress the defense and that’s, that’s the last thing that the coordinator wants is all that stress

Derek 34:58
guys, let’s go ahead and Then move on over into the tight end room. They’ve got Ian Thomas over there and Ian Thomas. You’re not a great year. This past year he finished tied in 58 only 20 receptions. 31 targets 145 through the air with one receiving touchdown in Really? Yeah, not a great year in a year that a lot of people were kind of expecting him to emergency what he could really do with a Greg Olson no longer down there in Carolina and it was something we just didn’t see to come to fruition. But guys, what are your thoughts on Ian Thomas?

Ian Thomas 2021 Fantasy Football

Chris Robin 35:33
Well, being Thomas, for me is just a non factor. He’s best suited for, you know, DFS formats. You know, his price was absolutely as cheap as it comes last season on both FanDuel and DraftKings. And that’s it. And in terms of seasonal content, he’s nothing more than a bye week filler. And personally, I don’t even think he’s that as a bye week filler. But if you had to in deep, very deep kind of dynasty leagues, or even in a deep redraft league or the bigger the teams that there are there in Thomas in 1012, even 14 team leagues, he won’t even be drafted. and rightfully so here. So to me, Ian Thomas is no more than a than a bye week filler. And even that, as I said, is probably going to be dependent on a matchup who’s the quarterback here, but for me personally, the DFS guy in me says that’s what that’s what he is. He’s just a punt play in DFS formats with his his bottom of the barrel type of pricing.

Alex 36:30
Yeah, so as we have said on this podcast several times, we’ve talked ad nauseum about the tight end position, you know, there there are the tiers that we have, we have that tier one, upper tier, that tier two, which there is a pretty sizable gap between tier those tier two guys in the tier one guys, tier one examples are a you know, oh, shoot, why am I blanking on every tight end in the league right now? kiddle. Kelce, those are your tier one types before this year you know, you can make a case for Zach Ertz in there but as far as as Thomas goes, Yeah, he’s not even in the tears at this rate. So by and by Bob I mean pass

Derek 37:19
all right. So he’s he’s tier na for you hmm

Alex 37:24
tier infinity at this point it just not there.

Derek 37:28
Yeah, I’m right there with you. I don’t know that even on the you know, if I completely punted the position and got down there and round 15 and had to take somebody at that. I’m gonna look somewhere else. I don’t know that there’s about any scenario I can paint that I’m gonna be drafting Ian Thomas. So let’s go ahead and move on over to the quarterback room and Teddy Bridgewater, still the quarterback qb 19 last year 340 completions on 492 attempts, 3734 yards with 15 passing touchdowns. 11 interceptions, ran the ball 53 times for 279 yards and five rushing touchdowns. Guys, what are your thoughts on Teddy Bridgewater,

Teddy Bridgewater 2021 Fantasy Football

Alex 38:09
so I am going to pass on Teddy Bridgewater but and I think that the Panthers you know, need to move on all that all that being said, Teddy Bridgewater is a an incredible story in this league and be one of the best guys from everything that I’ve read. And I’ve had very, very minor interactions with with Teddy Bridgewater, but it is just a guy that you root for, but honestly Teddy Bridgewater, his best role would be to serve as a backup and, and kudos to him because he did that well in New Orleans. And that turned into this contract, and this opportunity in Carolina, but Teddy Bridgewater is a backup quarterback in the NFL. And he’s just not there. And it’s really sad, because he did have a ton of tools. And honestly, you know, his time in Minnesota if it weren’t for that freak injury. I think he’d still be a Minnesota Viking. And I think that they would, he would be on a pretty good trajectory for a good career. But his best role is now as a backup. And it’s just, I think, what we’ve seen in this league, and this is such a copycat league is that we see a new head coach come in and get his quarterback right, and they get their quarterback in the draft because you have those guys linked together for at least the four or five years that that rookie contract is on because that’s typically about the length of a head coaching contract as you get, you know, four or five years. And so that’s what this league is trending towards. We’re gonna see it again this year. With Urban Meyer down there in Jacksonville. He’s going to get his rookie quarterback that’s going to run its course, whether it’s the course of the Philadelphia Eagles where they get a Super Bowl run out of it, and then it’s time to move on the course of the Los Angeles Rams where they got a Super Bowl run out of it and then it’s time to move on. I just think that the Panthers didn’t see what they wanted in this quarterback class in last year’s quarterback class when that rule was coming in. And now I think they see the need that they need to they see that they need to address that that position. Teddy was going to be a stopgap I think he was always going to be a stopgap if maybe he was able to be you know, half of what he was in New Orleans while Drew Brees was out but that was a really good New Orleans team. And I think Teddy would have been just fine had CMC not gotten hurt but I think he got exposed a little bit for not being what he needs to be in order to win in the NFL consistently and right wrong or indifferent winds come down to the quarterback whether that’s I you know, I don’t like that I don’t think wins or quarterbacks that but that’s how its measured. And it’s just not going to get the job done. So Teddy is is going to be a great backup for somebody he might even be you know, kind of what we saw last year in Miami. Where with like Ryan Fitzpatrick type where he’s the quarterback until that by week and then it’s the rookies turn. But I think Carolina with the eight pick, man if they if there’s still quarterbacks on the board there, you’re gonna have to really address that situation and you can get that quarterback for cheap, right you know, it’s it’s cheaper now to draft a rookie than it ever was. And if you can get a quarterback for cheap for four years, and hopefully he becomes you know, before you have to sign him for that monster contract in those four years. That’s what I think Carolina should do. So I’m staying away from from Teddy this year, even in a super flex League, probably going to look elsewhere or try and get something before Teddy becomes my option. If he’s the quarterback next year and Carolina

Chris Robin 41:53
personally to me Teddy Bridgewater is no more than than a quarterback three or four on a super flex team. And that’s saying something Given the importance of rostering to very good quarterbacks. There’s only so many of them in the league. There’s what 32 teams so there’s only 32 quarterbacks and you’re still telling me that Teddy Bridgewater is a excuse me a bench quarterback on a super flex roster. Absolutely. He’s just he’s he does more he will let me say this. At least he doesn’t hurt. He’s not he’s helping more than he’s hurting. That’s the thing I was looking for. But he’s not going to blow you out of the water. He’s not going to air out passes that nothing is really needed to roster when you roster Teddy Bridgewater, so he’s safe for me to leave elsewhere. Let him be someone else’s problem. Let him be on someone else’s team that like fully believes in him. And he’s going to throw for, you know, X amount of 3540 touchdowns in the season. It’s just not going to happen. The ship has sailed on Teddy Bridgewater. And like Alex said, It’s a shame because he is a good man. He’s a good high character guy. And he’s going to be fine as a backup as you said, Alex, and I’m sure he’ll be fine with that as well. So again, Teddy Bridgewater is better left on the waiver wire for me in kind of one quarterback leagues and in a super flex league. Obviously he needs to be you know, roster but he’s no more than like a backup quarterback on my fantasy team.

Derek 43:20
100% agreed. guy that was drafted as the 25th quarterback coming off the board last year. Obviously he outperformed his draft capital A little bit there, right 25th quarterback off the board finished at 19th with a consistency ranking around 17. So it was a it was a deal that he outperformed and you knew what you were going to get week in week out but was also a guy that wasn’t going to go out there and win your week. But same time, he wasn’t going to go out there and necessarily lose your week. And even in a super flex format. That’s not something that you can really play around with. When you’re coming into that super flex deal. That’s a guy that you put in for a bye week or fill in as your injury, something like that permits. So he’s a guy that I’m gonna let sit there I do think that the Panthers are going to find a way either this year or next year to move on from him. I know there’s a lot of trade rumors out there around them trying to get to Shaun Watson and things like that. I don’t see that happening, because everything that they’re talking about would involve sending Christian McCaffrey to the Texans and so at that point, the Texans have three running backs and no quarterback and so I don’t necessarily see that happening and I don’t imagine a deal happening any other way to it but Alex, you bring up an interesting point right there talking on drafting number eight there with that pick the quarterbacks from everything that I’ve been seeing. The only quarterback that most likely will still be available with that eight pick is going to be a guy that you’re very familiar with. And that’s Trey Lance, because everything I’ve been seeing looks like you’re gonna see Lawrence fields and Wilson all Come off the board before that eighth pick. So at that point, right, I’m a lien on your expertise of North Dakota State football here. What What should we expect out of Trey Lance?

Alex 45:12
I was going to go into that when we get into our rookies here in the next segment, but what you’re gonna see out of tray Lance is a composed passer who can make literally every throw you want him to make, and his exceptional runner of the football, which I think would pair well with with CMC and Carolina. But here’s the thing about Trey Lance. He only played in 17 collegiate games. He had 17 collegiate start, he appeared in two games his freshman year as part of the NCAA rule where you could play in up to four games and not burn your red shirt. So he just appeared in mop up duty. his freshman year, his redshirt freshman year was 2019 went 16. And oh, didn’t throw a single interception, and had upwards of 4040 total touchdowns through the air and on the ground that might have even been more than that. But Trey Lance is a heck of a thrower of the football. The the problem that you’re going to run into is that he has very limited game experience. So he is a guy that if you’re going to draft him, you’re probably going to need to sit him for a while so that he can adjust to the speed of the game. Keep in mind, he only played one game, this last fall, North Dakota State only played one game, it was against Central Arkansas, tre played Okay, certainly not to the expectation level, which a lot of people had very high expectations of him, he threw an interception, which I was curious to see how he would respond to throwing an interception because will the kid meltdown or will he not? He was fine. ran the football well, and that was really what carried NDSU to that when, if you’re going to draft a trade Lance, you’re gonna need time to develop a trailer, he’s only 20 years old. He can’t even drink a beer to celebrate his draft, his name being called in the draft. So if they draft Trey Lance, then Teddy’s probably going to stick around for a little bit in Carolina. But that’s, you know, obviously a lots gonna change between now and April, when that draft happens, tre still has to go through a pro day, he still has to go through the combine whatever that’s going to look like this year. And he’s going to do well and when it comes to the interview, and in terms of the wonderlic if they’re still doing that the kids smart, he’s very smart. He understands the concepts of Defense’s and you know what to do. NDSU runs a pro style offense so it’s going to be an easy transition. He was under center a lot, but you don’t see too much out of the college game anymore. It’s just a matter of his maturity level which he’s very mature kid but he’s still only 20 years old. And he was playing against and I hate to say this because I think FCS competition is very good. I would say that, you know, FCS competition is probably just as good as any Mac school or any you know, Mountain West school. Like you’re gonna you’re gonna see pretty, pretty good competition that way, but I think he’s still going to have to adjust to the speed of the game. That’s going to take time. Hopefully reps in practice will be able to get that but if they go trade Lance, then Teddy is going to be the starter at least for the first part of the year until they want to bust out the shiny new toy.
